What is Asbestos?
Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring, crystallised mineral fibres known for their resistance to heat, electricity and corrosion.
In the past it has been widely used in construction materials and insulation. It is not used anymore but it often uncovered during construction and demolition projects, where it is often encountered in the surrounding soils.
Asbestos is generally divided into two subgroups: serpentine and amphiboles. Serpentine asbestos (Chrysotile or white asbestos) was the most commonly used type of asbestos, with soft flexible fibres. Amphibole asbestos (Crocidolite- blue asbestos, amosite- brown asbestos, tremolite, actinolite and anthophyllite) has brittle fibres and are more hazardous to health as these brittle, needle-like fibres are more prone to snapping and being released into the air.
Work with asbestos is divided into three categories:
· Licensed work
· Notifiable non-licensed work
· Non-licensed work
