Director George Green had the pleasure of returning to one of his most recently completed gardens this month.

This beautiful Arts and Crafts House offers a fine backdrop to his planting schemes, which at this time of year appear to wrap around it like a snug winter coat!

Thanks to .s.gardens the grounds still look well-loved and ordered, offering clear winter structure.

The flowering borders below the raised main terrace still offer so much at this time of year, with lovely fluffy seedheads of Aster, ghostly spires of Perovskia amongst others, reason enough to leave perennial borders standing over winter.

To the front of the house, formal chipped topiary Euonymus ‘Jean Hughes’ tables are developing into nice frames, guiding family and guests towards a warm welcome through the front door. Whilst further along the borders, Hydrangea quercifolia, appear as if they are already dressing the house for Christmas, with their seasonal rosy-red leaves.

Whilst time is running out, it is still not too late to plant Narcissi for early season impact in your garden.

Planting bulbs allows opportunity for bold sweeps of colour or simple refinement. These Falmouth Bay Narcissus planted en masse in this Rectory Garden, transform this wild area, enhancing the view from inside the house.

Another thing to keep in mind is that bulbs make delightful Christmas gifts for friends and family, bringing colour and fragrance into the home, even on the dreariest of winter days.

Britain’s native Anemonoides nemorosa, carpeting an ancient woodland surrounding a garden we had the privilege of being invited to advise on recently. Also known, rather charmingly, as windflower, it is common in the British Isles but due to its slow natural spreading ability (said to be as as little as six feet per century!) it is often used as an indicator for ancient woodland. In this case found to be in such a woodland. Beautiful and precious, it is imperative we look after such plants and we at TT will plant them in many of our more naturally designed areas. Richard even has them in his London garden, growing with native Hyacinthoides non-scripta. 🌸

We often work by the principle of simple structure for the front of a property, which is designed to offer a sense of arrival both through the seasons. Often the entrance to the property faces towards north/northeast and northwest, which contrary to the thinking of many is a real advantage. A lot of the plants we use, to create the desired structure, love shadier conditions. Here facing north/northwest we planted one of our favourites, Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ which thrives in damper shady conditions and looks great even in winter if you leave the flower heads on. Planted with the evergreen Buxus hedging to define a crisp edge and contrasting rows of Liriope muscari ‘Big Blue’ and Lavandula ‘Hidcote’ (which receives enough sun to thrive). Bulbs in addition amongst the Hydrangeas, all adds to a very simple, appealing and evolving, seasonal display. Beautifully maintained by

Thanks to .s.gardens for this beautiful early morning picture along the driveway of a garden we designed approx. 15 years ago. The yew ‘gate posts’ are designed to draw the eye towards the front door of the main house, to avoid confusion as to which way to go, since upon arrival through the man gates there are two routes one could take, one being to the more utilitarian rear coach-yard. The house at this stage is obscured from view, since we moved the drive to make for a longer, more enticing journey towards the front entrance to the property. One now arrives with the grander entrance in glorious full view.

It’s that time of year again. We advise don’t hastily remove leaves because that’s what you do. Pause a moment and enjoy the textures and colours and effects they create in the ground. As far as possible save those leaves, as mulch for your borders, since they will return vital nutrients to the soil, feed essential soil organisms, provide hibernating opportunity for many insects and mammals and in their slow decay can help store carbon deep within your soil. Let’s not be so obsessively tidy… there are many benefits of just relaxing and enjoying the season 👌🏻
