Inspirational Outdoor Living

We love seeing progress, especially when it’s seasonally relevant progress!

We first visited this project on a dark, damp January day at the beginning of last year, so it wasn’t easy for our clients to imagine just how much potential their garden had.

They were lost and had design fatigue and they wanted passion, inspiration & vision.

This is where 3D visualisations come into their own. They helped us to design and our clients to truly understand how their space could look and feel, making the design process clearer and more collaborative from the outset.

Our clients had a clear vision for their garden. They wanted an outdoor space that flowed naturally from their beautiful home, somewhere they could relax with family, whilst also creating the perfect setting for hosting friends and entertaining throughout the summer months (and perhaps even the winter ones too!).

We were absolutely chuffed when we saw the finished result, and thankfully the clients were too:

"We are massively enjoying the kitchen outside and eating at the bar in particular."

Projects like this remind us how important our outdoor spaces have become. As we spend more time at home and enjoy increasingly warmer summers, gardens are becoming a much more significant part of how we live, relax and connect with others.

🎉 Artichoke is 18! 🎉

Yesterday we celebrated 18 years of designing places, solving problems, and helping our clients bring their ideas to life.

Over the last 18 years we've completed 500+ designs across heritage renovations, home extensions, restaurants, hotels, contemporary new builds, and rural developments.

What hasn't changed is our commitment to delivering great design at a fair price.
A huge thank you to our clients, collaborators, and supporters. We're especially proud that more than half of our work comes through recommendations and repeat clients – there's no better feedback than that.

This year we've been working on some exciting projects, including Manor Farm and new farm diversification developments near Warfield and Leighton Buzzard, helping shape the future of rural communities.

Most importantly, thank you to our amazing team. Your talent, passion, and hard work make Artichoke what it is. 🙏

When Architecture Makes You Smile 😊

Our fabulous architect Esther intended to visit this year’s Serpentine Pavilion in London’s Kensington Gardens though with a child poorly at home, she was left marvelling at it through photographs and messages from her friends instead.

The pavilion is a reminder that the most memorable architecture doesn’t just perform well, it creates moments of delight – creating an experience, a feeling and a more visceral memory.

The RIBAJ (the official magazine and website of the Royal Institute of British Architects) explores the legacy of the Serpentine Pavilion in its latest issue, arguing that the most successful commissions are often those that embrace fun alongside craft and conceptual ambition.

This year’s pavilion continues that conversation, offering a space that encourages exploration, connection and curiosity. How? In this case (amongst other things), the architect plays and explores how many architectural components, surfaces and structures they can make from a simple clay brick.

It’s a valuable reminder that architecture is at its best when it engages people emotionally as well as functionally. Great design isn’t only about how a building looks or works; it’s about how it makes people feel.

Who's designing the future?

Last week was all about inspiring the next generation.

We welcomed Noah to Artichoke HQ for a week of work experience, while Chris headed to Windsor Boys' School for a careers event to share the reality of life in architecture and running a small practice, warts and all.

None of us has a crystal ball when it comes to the future of work. But if we can help young people better understand the opportunities, challenges and pathways ahead, that's time well spent.

So, receiving feedback like this really made our week:

I just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you so much for the work experience you organised for Noah. He clearly enjoyed his time with you and you gave a lot of time and thought as to how he could use his time. I think he came away learning rather more than he expected.

I work for a large multi-national organisation and we had children in the office last week on school work experience and their days were not nearly so well structured, interesting or as organised as Noah's. Once again we really wanted to thank you all for taking the time. I know you are busy and it is a drain and time commitment for you but he really did gain something from the experience."

Thank you for your kind words (and your generous Thank You gift which was very useful watching the Wimbledon final). If we've helped even one young person feel more excited or confident about their future, it was worth every minute.

What's really holding your project back?

At our team meeting this morning, each of our architects was sharing updates on their current projects when Juliette asked a simple question:

"Why do some projects take so long to get going?"

It prompted an interesting conversation.

One local project we discussed began with an initial enquiry back in 2011. Others have also taken several years before construction finally started.

The reasons are rarely about a lack of ambition. More often, projects pause because clients reach a point where they don't know how to navigate the next challenge. Planning uncertainty, budgets, changing family needs, site constraints or simply not knowing the best way forward can all cause a project to stall.

That's where we can add real value.

Every client and project is unique, but after working with so many clients and on so many different homes and buildings, we've encountered most physical and emotional challenges before. Experience gives us the perspective to identify solutions and help clients move forward with confidence.

Filling the gaps

Creating more (and better)! space at home doesn’t always mean adding more and more space.

Some of the best opportunities can be found within the footprint you already have, or can perhaps be made by just small additions.

By reimagining the existing layout and thoughtfully connecting underused areas between different parts of your home, it’s possible to unlock valuable living space without significantly increasing the overall size of the property.

Clever design can transform awkward corners, unused side returns, dark passages, and disconnected rooms into bright, functional spaces that enhance natural light, improve flow, and make everyday living more enjoyable.

The layout of this property was cramped and dark and the entrance couldn’t be seen from the street. The big win was by infilling the gap between the garage and the house, which not only created both a forward-facing obvious entrance to the property, but also the entrance space became open internally too, making it bright and creating a natural flow into the main rooms of the house.

The result? A home that feels larger, more cohesive, and better suited to modern living—while preserving precious outdoor space and avoiding unnecessary overdevelopment.
