Yes, open plan works best when you have a cohesive feel to each space which links them all together, but each space needs to be designed as its own room.
Open plan works beautifully when you design it as three distinct spaces that share a floor. Kitchen, Dining and Living all need their own lighting, own space, its own mood.
Imagine all the lights turn on together, imagine a sofa floating in the space with nothing anchoring it, imagine dining chairs encroaching on the TV area. The moment those zones blur the space it loses all its warmth.
