🌡️ Is your home overheating in summer?
I've recently been receiving more enquiries about reducing internal overheating, especially in homes with large areas of glazing. But there are solutions.
The trend for expansive glass elevations isn't new—and it's still hugely popular. But during the increasingly hot spells we're experiencing in the UK, large areas of glazing can contribute significantly to unwanted solar heat gain. Solar heat gain occurs when sunlight transfers thermal energy into a building, primarily through windows, skylights, and glazed surfaces.
Since 2022, Building Regulations Part O has required new homes to consider overheating risk at the design stage. But what about existing properties with large south-facing windows and glazed extensions?
The reality is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution.
✅ Architectural shading
✅ External blinds or screens
✅ Tree planting and landscaping
✅ Glazing specification improvements
✅ Building orientation and window positioning
All can play a role in improving comfort and reducing overheating.
The best results are usually achieved when shading is considered early in the design process, but there are effective retrofit solutions available too.
If you're planning a new build, extension, or are struggling with an overheating space, now is the ideal time to explore permanent shading solutions.
