Scaling a national rollout sounds exciting…

So, what’s the reality?

Often it comes down to hundreds of small technical decisions being made quickly and precisely.

Before a new gym can open, there are questions that need to be answered, such as:

- Can the structure support the equipment loads?
- Is the drainage infrastructure sufficient?
- Will acoustic issues affect neighbouring occupiers?
- Can the layout actually operate efficiently day to day?

The PureGym programme had 42 potential locations that were assessed over an eight-month period to support their expansion plans.

That meant coordinating surveys and technical reviews across multiple locations simultaneously – while keeping pace with a commercial acquisition programme that couldn't wait for slow decisions.

Because successful expansion isn’t just about finding buildings.

It’s about identifying which sites are genuinely deliverable before significant investment is made.

We've shared more about this project in our case study - https://www.iconicprojectmanagement.com/post/iconic-project-management-puregym-rollout-success

What does transparent project management actually look like in practice?

For us it's less about saying the right things and more about the habits that build trust over time,

being clear about fees from the start,

flagging risks when they arise rather than when they've already become problems,

and owning mistakes instead of managing around them.

That sounds straightforward.

But it's often where projects start to drift, when conversations happen too late, or information gets shared after it's useful.

If you're thinking about what to look for in a PM company, or what to expect from one, it's worth a read – https://www.iconicprojectmanagement.com/post/what-makes-a-good-construction-project-management-company

If something goes wrong on site, who's actually responsible?

It's one of those questions that sounds simple until you're in the middle of a project and everyone's pointing in a different direction.

Understanding how responsibility is split, and agreeing it early, is one of the most important things a project team can do.

We've broken down how it typically works in our blog

We've found that some project environments can make delivery harder than it needs to be.

If there’s too much control, too many layers or too much focus on process over progress.

In great project management, we’ve noticed it creates clarity, removes friction and helps talented people do their best work.

We’ve also seen that more projects succeed when:
- communication is open
- problems are surfaced early
- teams feel trusted to contribute
- and leadership focuses on enabling progress

If this resonates with how you're thinking about your next project, we'd love to have a conversation - https://www.iconicprojectmanagement.com/contact

Most people only see the finished runway.

What they don’t see is the planning and coordination behind delivering it safely within a live airport environment.

Nearly 100 early morning runway handbacks.
Night works around daily operations.
Strict regulatory oversight.
No room for error.

This runway extension was delivered within timeframe and budget, without disrupting airport operations or a single safety incident.

Project management company may often be judged by their outcomes.

The number of projects delivered, the budgets met and programmes completed.

While these are very important metrics, it's not the whole picture.

What also matters is what is less visible on the surface.
- How people communicate when things shift
- How decisions are made under pressure
- How a team responds when something doesn’t go to plan

Many times, these day-to-day behaviours sit behind what makes a great team.

We’ve shared a few thoughts on what we think this looks like and why we believe it's important.

It’s not just outcomes. Transparent project management, strong culture, and clear communication all play a part in how projects are delivered.

Running a project yourself with limited PM support?

It's possible...

but only if roles are clear and you understand what project management actually involves.

We've seen it firsthand. Where expectations didn't match the agreed scope, gaps in coordination followed quickly.

If PM responsibility isn't formally owned, it still needs to be done. If it isn't, the project will feel the absence.

Some projects don’t get the luxury of a clear site.

They happen alongside day-to-day life.

This refurbishment was delivered within a live college environment, with students nearby and limited access throughout.

That changes how you plan, how you communicate and how you manage risk.

Because success isn’t just the finished space. It’s how you get there.
- Minimal disruption.
- Clear coordination.
- Delivered to programme.

That’s where strong project management really shows its value.
