Brown rat. frequent visitor to our gardens and our houses .Originating from central Asia it was introduced to the United Kingdom in the 1700's and was carried in on boats, but is now widespread due to its adaptability and incredible breeding rate Rats can have up to 12 in a litter and as many as 7 litters a year with their litter being sexually mature in 3 months. Rats carry Weills disease commonly known as leptospirosis and we can contact this through touch open wounds and ebrasions. What can we do you ask, well rats have to constantly eat and drink so remove food and water from your gardens as rats will not stay if their is no food. Make your house safe and leave no gaps or holes in the brick work. Female rats will only nest close to a food and water source due to their litter being fed often and with none of the above you will not have rats. Rat droppings will not be spotted easily as they tend to group them as it is a social thing where they groom each other.
