Rams Head fire irons. Over the years I've made quite a number of them, and one of which a dear and valued friend of mine, a master craftsman wood worker, took with him when he returned home to Sweden some years ago and which now hangs next to his wood stove in his home nestled among the woods near the shores of a lake several hundred miles north of Stockholm, amidst the wild natural beauty of Sweden.
The one one the right of the photograph was bought by a lady many years ago.
When she became to frail to carry on living independently and moved into a care home she requested that it be returned to me.
So now, with the one on the left which I kept for Ann and myself to tend our own fire, when time comes and I'm no more, should they so desire there will be one for each of our grandchildren to tend their fires.
" In the absence of hand-made things, our culture is lost. Just as connecting with our food brings greater meaning to our lives, so connecting with the people who make everyday items brings meaning to the things we use in day to day life.
When items are made by hand, they have their own soul, teachings and memories to share with us. Tradition creates lineage, and that lineage connects us to the birth of time and the creation of the universe.
It's not humans by themselves who create culture. Culture is born out of our relationship with the earth and each other. If you want to save your culture, turn to the earth and begin anew."
