Pentrans, Sir FĂ´n/Anglesey - Evergreen Architects

It's always rewarding to see a project come full circle.

Working behind the scenes in the early stages of a project means we don't always get to see the finished result. Thank you to for sharing the completion photos of this 4 bedroom new-build private residence overlooking the Menai Straits in Anglesey.

The structural design incorporated traditional building materials, but to Passivhaus standards, incorporating thick insulated walls, high performance glazing and exposed timber frame roof trusses.

It's a pleasure to see the finished home and the architect's vision brought to life. Looks fantastic , don't you think?👌

Routes into Engineering | Meet The Graduate

For our final Routes into Engineering feature, we're catching up with Owen, whose journey with JPS began as a summer placement student and has since led to a role as Graduate Structural Engineer. A University of Liverpool Civil Engineering MEng graduate, Owen reflects on his first steps into the profession.

Since joining JPS, Owen has enjoyed seeing the difference between studying engineering and working on real projects. While university gave him strong technical foundations, his first year in industry has shown him the value of communication, teamwork and learning from those around him.

One of his proudest moments so far has been returning to the University of Liverpool to support ongoing projects- a real full-circle moment and a chance to give back to a place that means a lot to him.

His advice for students thinking about a career in engineering? Don't worry about knowing everything from day one. Stay curious, ask questions and be open to learning.

Routes into Engineering - Summer Placement/ MEng in Civil & Structural Engineering.

Seb is currently completing his fourth consecutive summer placement with JPS while studying for an MEng in Civil & Structural Engineering at the University of Manchester. Now in his final year, he has continued to build on the technical knowledge and practical experience gained throughout his degree, developing a strong foundation for a career in the industry.

With a particular interest in structural engineering and the residential sector, Seb enjoys tackling the unique challenges that each project brings.

At Uni, one of his proudest achievements was designing and analysing a truss bridge as part of a third-year group project, where he developed an Excel-based tool to streamline structural calculations. Looking ahead, he is keen to explore the use of AI in structural engineering, continue developing his technical expertise, and work towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.

His advice to future engineers: stay curious, seize every opportunity, and gain as much practical experience as possible.

Routes into Engineering: Degree Apprenticeship

Our latest Routes into Engineering spotlight features Shay, who has just completed the first year of his five-year Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeship at the Liverpool’s John Moores University.

After joining JPS in 2023 as an Apprentice Technician in our Civils team, Shay has been combining hands-on industry experience with university study, with a BEng in Civil Engineering.

For Shay, the biggest attraction of a degree apprenticeship was the opportunity to earn while learning, gain real-world experience and graduate without student debt.

"Working in the workplace has taught me skills that cannot be learned through lectures alone. It has helped me understand how the theory I learn at university is applied in everyday civil engineering."

Balancing work and study takes commitment, but Shay says the experience has helped him develop valuable organisation, time management and professional skills.

In the future, he hopes to work on larger-scale projects, complete his degree and progress towards becoming a Chartered Engineer.

His advice to anyone considering the apprenticeship route?

Be prepared to work hard, stay organised and make the most of every opportunity. The experience you gain alongside your degree gives you an excellent foundation for your future career.

Congratulations, Shay, on a successful first year!

Routes into Engineering - Work Experience
Last week, JPS was pleased to welcome Aidan, Lee's son, to the office for a week of work experience.
During his placement, Aidan gained hands-on experience using AutoCAD and SketchUp, accompanied Lee on site visits, and developed a greater understanding of how engineering projects are delivered.
Reflecting on his week, Aidan said:
"The most enjoyable part of my work experience was taking part in site visits and seeing how engineering designs are applied to real construction projects."
Aidan was particularly surprised by the amount of teamwork and planning involved in engineering projects and enjoyed learning new technical and design skills throughout the week.

We're delighted that the experience has strengthened his interest in engineering and wish him every success in his future studies and career.

We are always keen to support the next generation of engineers. If you're an A-level student or undergraduate interested in work experience opportunities with , please get in touch using the contact details on our website.

Last week, Jon and Mike were delighted to attend Willmott Dixon’s Construction & SHEQ Awards in London.

The event was an opportunity to recognised the achievements of the Willmott Dixon team and celebrate the strong partnerships and collaborative working relationships that help Willmott Dixon to deliver outstanding projects across the UK.

We are incredibly proud that JPS was named Northern Design Partner of the Year and nominated for the overall award. This award is particularly meaningful to us as it reflects the strength of our relationship with Willmott Dixon and the collaborative approach we share on every project.

Being recognised by one of our most valued clients is a tremendous honour and a testament to the hard work, expertise, and commitment of the entire team.

Congratulations to all award winners and nominees, and thank you to for a fantastic event and for your continued partnership. We look forward to building on our success together in the years ahead.
