Great weekend with a great cohort. Was a very lovely experience to share some local knowledge of the North Walian mountains and coast with like minded enthusiasts from all over the place. Looking forward to the next trip!

The first AGS Young Person’s Weekend took place between 24-26 June 2022 in North Wales. Amateur alpine growers, horticultural students and young professionals gathered together to discuss, study and look for alpine plants in the wild.

Top or bottom? Any lawn will have all sorts of wildflowers and valuable nectar sources already in it.. all you have to do is let it grow out and flower to be a useful resource for wildlife. Maintaining cut lawns is a resource eater.. petrol for cutting/feed. So now what’s needed, a path, a spot to lay on and let the rest intensionally flower. If it’s intensional it’ll always look like it fits into a garden setting.

Monoculture turfs being taken over by meadow. Helping to increase biodiversity and provide an invaluable nectar bank for pollinators. It’s estimated that UK gardens cover 4,330 km2 of the UK’s surface area (about a fifth of the size of wales)… imagine if that was used as a rich resource for wildlife.

This week I’ve been busy building up this little gem at Birmingham’s NEC for BBC Gardener’s World Live. The theme for this year’s ‘Beautiful Border Competition’ is Wildlife. My response is showing the easiest thing anyone to do to encourage more wildlife and pollinators to the garden is just to let your lawn grow.. stop feeding/watering/weeding/mowing it and let it flower.. from daisy’s to dandelions to ragged robins’s; let them all grow and flower. Stop maintaining a green desert of monoculture lawn and let bioveristy increase and enjoy the resource that we can all easily unleash. Go one further and plant up that same area as a perennial meadow and you’ll cultivate a species rich nectar bank where there previously was a wildlife poor resource.

Last day of .loveplants … I hope it’s inspired more of us to give up the green desert of lawns and allow them to become rich nectar banks.

‘Hyper naturalistic’ planting; using a mix of natives and non-natives and using colours that are reminiscent of natural spring associations but a little more heightened to grab your attention.

Papaver cambricum (syn. Meconopsis cambrica) - The welsh poppy - a naughty lil garden escapee that looks very happy and at home in north wales. The orange form is always a favourite to find against blue/purple slate.. a staple of May.
