💡Top tip: Fence and gateposts should never depend on each other.

When installing a gateway in a high tensile fencing system, treat the fence and the gate as two separate structures.
Why? Because unexpected pressure on one can damage the other.

For example:
🌳 If a tree falls on the fence or cattle hit the wire, the tension can cause the end strainer to move under load. If your gate is hung from that post, it may no longer swing properly once the strain is released.
🚜 On the other hand, if a vehicle knocks the gatepost out of alignment, it could compromise the tension of the entire fence line if the two are connected.

Best practice:
• Install the gateposts a few metres away from the fence box strainer
• Fill the gap with a stock-proof barrier
• Fix the barrier to only one side, allowing it to touch (but not be fixed to) the other

This way, if one structure moves, the other remains unaffected.
A simple detail during installation that can save a lot of repairs later. Looking for more advice and product selection for your project? Get in touch

At Farmbits, the products we choose are based on performance, compliance and long term reliability.

Preservative treatments are a large part of this. Tanalith E and Tansote stand out because:
✔ Fully authorised under GB BPR (Biocidal Product Regulation) – meaning their active ingredients have passed strict assessments for human, animal and environmental safety.
✔ Proven long-term performance – Tanalith E has 30+ years of independent field data protecting timber from fungal decay, rot and insect attack.
✔ Trusted across Europe – Tansote also holds recognised BPR authorisation and strong long-term field performance.

While other waterborne preservatives are widely used, they often lack the same depth of performance data or proven longevity, particularly in ground-contact or heavy-duty outdoor applications.

Industry guidance also suggests some alternatives don’t match the durability of modern copper-organic systems like Tanalith for long service outdoor use.

When it comes to fencing, it’s tempting to focus on the price tag and choose the cheapest option. But here’s the reality every farmer and landowner learns sooner or later: fencing isn’t a cost, it’s an investment in your land’s future.

You might choose standard posts to save on cost, but find that repairs can add up quickly, fence stability suffers and the replacement cycle never ends. Meanwhile, those who invested in a more premium product such as our Platnium incised posts, are still able to rely on the same fence line 10+ years later.

What makes Platinum Incised Posts different?
These aren’t just treated posts, they’re engineered for long-term performance.

✔ Deep incising technology – thousands of precision cuts allow preservative to pe*****te deep into the timber, protecting the core rather than just the surface.

✔ Higher preservative retention – treated to 5.2% compared with the typical 3.5% UC4 industry standard, providing stronger resistance to rot, fungal decay and insects.

✔ Kiln dried before treatment – moisture reduced to 28–34%, allowing deeper treatment pe*******on while preventing twisting, splitting and warping.

✔ 15-year warranty – backed by real agricultural performance.
Even with a slightly higher initial outlay, Platinum Incised Posts can save 20–30% over their lifetime when you factor in labour, materials and repairs.

As the old farming saying goes:
“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Your fence works every day protecting your livestock, crops and land. Investing in quality posts means less maintenance, fewer replacements and more time focusing on the work that matters.

Because the most expensive fence…is the one you have to build twice.

Solar-powered energisers are becoming increasingly common these days. In the past, farmers typically relied on energisers powered by heavy 12V batteries or 9V batteries. Now, however, a wide range of solar-powered alternatives are available. For more and more farmers, choosing solar energy is a logical step forward. These devices are lighter and much easier to transport, and they come equipped with an integrated battery that automatically recharges in daylight. This ensures the energiser keeps working reliably at all times.
