From a bare bulb to a fully wired garage ⚡

BEFORE: One pendant light. No sockets. No proper supply.

AFTER: Dedicated SWA cable feed from the house, new consumer unit, lighting circuit, socket circuit - all surface-mounted, tested and certified.

It's amazing how much more usable a garage becomes when you've got proper light and power in there. This is one of the most common jobs we do, and one of the most satisfying.

Every installation comes with a full Electrical Installation Certificate to BS 7671.

This detached garage had no power at all - now it's got lighting, sockets and its own dedicated supply, all run properly with steel wire armoured cable and a new consumer unit.

The heating works. The boards are wired correctly. And she knows exactly how to set every room from her iPad.

That last part matters more than people think. New heating is only an upgrade if the person living with it knows how to use it.

Seven storage heaters out. Seven electric radiators in. Two consumer units sorted.

Storage heaters have a fundamental problem — they charge up overnight and release heat whether you want it or not. Modern electric radiators give room-by-room control, programmable schedules, and no wasted heat.

The electrical work was more involved than it looks. DB2 needed a new 100A main switch, properly fed on 16mm² tails, old contactors removed, switched fused spurs installed at every radiator location.

But the bit I'm most pleased with? Sitting down with the tenant afterwards and making sure she was completely comfortable using the app — every zone, every schedule, on her own iPad — before I left.

That's the job done properly.

Before and after from a consumer unit upgrade.

The old Wylex fuse box had rewirable fuses and no RCD protection at all. If you recognise those coloured fuse carriers — blue, red, white — your house probably has something similar.

The new board has individual RCBO protection on every circuit. That means if one circuit trips, the rest of the house stays on. And every circuit is protected against earth faults, not just overloads.

This was a one-day job. Power off in the morning, new board tested and certified by the afternoon.

Found this behind a wall during a rewire. Cables joined with red insulation tape. Exposed copper. No junction box, no connectors, no protection.

This isn’t rare. I find stuff like this more often than you’d think — especially in older York properties where previous work has been done on the cheap or by someone who shouldn’t have been doing it.

The scary part? Everything was working. The lights came on, the sockets were fine. The homeowner had no reason to suspect anything was wrong.

If your house was built before the 1980s and hasn’t been rewired, it’s worth getting it checked. An EICR takes a couple of hours and tells you exactly what’s going on.

Same house. Same front door. Completely different feeling.

The customer wanted something welcoming but practical — warm enough to look good, bright enough to feel safe. Two up/down wall lights either side of the arch, wired into a dusk-to-dawn photocell so they come on automatically.

No timers to set. No switches to forget. Just a front door that looks like this every evening.

Did you know an RCD in a modern consumer unit can cut the power in 30 milliseconds — fast enough to prevent a fatal electric shock?

Old fuse boxes don’t have this protection at all.

If you’re not sure what you’ve got, open the cupboard under your stairs. Switches you can flick? Consumer unit. Round holders you pull out? Fuse box.
