Not all but most plasterers these days will look at an artex ceiling and straight away advise it to be overboarded but plastering directly over an artex ceiling when the existing surface is stable and well-adhered is absolutely fine. It preserves ceiling height and avoids the extra cost and disruption of taking down existing coving and installing new plasterboard.

The process typically involves sealing the artex with a bonding agent such as SBR, followed by applying a skim coat of finishing plaster to create a smooth, modern surface. This method is generally quicker and less invasive than overboarding, making it ideal for occupied homes. However, it does rely on the integrity of the original ceiling, if the artex is loose, heavily cracked, or contains asbestos, overboarding or professional removal may be the safer option.
