It’s happening! ☀️⚡🚐

Occasionally, I doubt myself particularly when making big decisions involving equally big numbers! But being in business is about making decisions. Some you get right, and some you simply learn from.

Back in January, I decided to invest in solar at our offices. We installed a 15,200kW solar array with 40kWh battery storage, capable of powering our offices, heating and cooling systems and two electric survey vehicles.

It was a big investment, but I stopped looking at solar simply as an environmental investment and started looking at it as business infrastructure.

Generating and storing our own electricity gives us greater energy security, cost certainty and independence. Instead of simply paying increasingly unpredictable energy bills, we've invested in an asset that should generate something we need every day for decades.

That got me thinking...

Our warehouse has a large roof doing absolutely nothing, while our construction arm operates a fleet powered by good old-fashioned dinosaur poo. 🦖The vans were getting old and due for replacement anyway, so why not go all in?

So, last month, I made another big decision. We're doing it!

Our first fully electric long wheelbase Ford Transit arrived on Monday, and today the scaffolders arrived as phase one of our second solar installation began.

This time we're installing:

☀️ 48 panels / 23,040kW solar array

🔋 40kWh battery storage

⚡ Two intelligent 11kW EV chargers

🏢 Intelligent backup power in the event of an outage

We're effectively turning a redundant warehouse roof into an energy-producing asset, while reducing our exposure to two unavoidable business costs in electricity and vehicle fuel.

I've never been one to follow in the footsteps of others. At Dryfix, we'd rather lead from the front, set the precedent and demonstrate what's possible.

Soon, all the energy needed to run our offices, buildings and vehicles will all be generated from the roofs above our heads.

Although admittedly, that last bit might be the biggest gamble of the entire project... 😂

What a fabulous week of weather we've just had and even better when your survey vehicle fleet is 100% electric and powered by the sun!

Stage two coming later this year is to transition the contracting arm of our business to full electric too. By the end of the year, we'll be a full electric operation. I'd be really interested to speak with any other business owners who have made the shift from fossil fuels to electric?......

Sometimes it's necessary to bring the wise old owls out of retirement! This week, Super "G" , better known as Big Geoff has dusted off his work boots, climbed back into the digger, and made light work of a new soakaway drainage installation.

Whilst damp proof courses, ventilation and condensation often dominate discussions around dampness, drains and soakaways are frequently the forgotten culprits, particularly in older and period properties.

Many of these drainage systems are well over 100 years old. Buried deep below ground, they are often out of sight and therefore out of mind. Over time they become blocked, collapse, silt up, or simply reach the end of their service life. The result can be poor disposal of surface water, saturated ground conditions, and increased moisture levels around a building's foundations.

When investigating dampness, it's important not to focus solely on what's happening inside the property. Sometimes the real cause is hidden beneath your feet.

As we often say at Dryfix: diagnosing damp correctly means understanding how water behaves both above and below ground.

This client came to us after several unsuccessful attempts by others to resolve persistent damp and salt problems affecting their chimney and fireplace.

While not original to the property, the fireplace was an attractive feature the client was keen to retain. Over time, prolonged moisture exposure had caused significant deterioration corroding elements of the surround, forcing inlay tiles away from the reveals through salt crystallisation, and lifting / damage to the original hearth tiles. Beneath the floor, the situation was more severe, the
hearth structure had partially collapsed, leaving the entire base unstable.

Despite repeated repair attempts over the years, the underlying issues had never been properly addressed. As a result, both the condition and appearance of the fireplace continued to decline.

Our approach focused on resolving the root causes and reinstating the structure correctly. The fire surround was carefully removed to allow access. The failed hearth foundation was excavated and rebuilt, and the fireback replaced before reconstructing the chimney recess. The original surround was then cleaned and reinstated, with the existing inlay tiles salvaged where possible. Fortunately, the client was able to source suitable replacement hearth tiles, allowing the feature to be sympathetically restored.

The end result is a fireplace that not only looks the part again, but is sound and no longer at risk from the defects that had previously gone unresolved.

It’s been a while since I’ve put a video like this together… and I know why!

I absolutely hate voiceovers.

They take forever, never quite land how you want them to, and I’ve clearly got the vocal tone of a train conductor. I’m far more comfortable in front of the camera, walking through things as I see them, in real time.

If you follow my posts, you’ll know I regularly share snippets from surveys. Survey procedures, Investigation techniques, opening-up works, sampling, and sometimes the analytical side afterwards.

What I don’t often share is the full journey… from initial inspection right through to completion.

This one’s a bit different. I happened to capture content at each stage of the process, and it turned into a story that more or less tells itself. A good example of how proper diagnosis, investigation, and follow-through should look in practice.
