Mosaic Restoration Completed- Sevenoaks
The restoration of a late 19th-century property mosaic floor has now been completed. The floor, originally laid when the room was designed as an orangery, had remained concealed for decades beneath layers of carpet and modern ceramic tiles.
Once uncovered, the mosaic was found to have suffered extensive deterioration. Significant cracks, surface losses, and missing sections were evident. Structural investigation revealed that the supporting steel beams — 6 m in length and spaced at 800 mm intervals — had corroded. This corrosion displaced sections of the floor, causing widespread cracking and creating cavities of approximately 5–6 mm beneath the surface.
Stabilisation was carried out through the injection of low-viscosity resin into the cracks. Areas of loss were repaired using traditional hammer and hardie tools to cut replacement tesserae, ensuring accurate like-for-like replication. Following structural consolidation, the entire mosaic was deep cleaned and treated with a breathable sealer to safeguard its long-term preservation.
