It feels a bit odd talking about applying wetters after the weather we've been having of late. However this is one lawn treatment that really does work best if it's applied before it's needed.

What are wetters?

Lawn wetters, aka wetting agents are the greenskeepers' best kept secret. They overcome water surface tension and waxy soil coatings to allow water to pe*****te the soil and circulate around plant roots. The result? A lawn stays greener for longer during dry spells and recovers quicker after periods of drought.

Have you ever noticed how difficult it can be to rehydrate a really dry lawn? Water just seems to either run straight off or pool on the surface. That's because the soil has become hydrophobic. It's a natural phenomenon but it's somewhat annoying because it means that no matter how much water falls on the grass - it just doesn't get to the roots.

Lawn wetters overcome that problem BUT they must be applied BEFORE the soil dries out. That means spring time or early summer. If you wait to see if we get a drought, you'll likely miss your opportunity to make the most of this really effective treatment.

We've had an unusually dry spring in the UK,and some lawns are already starting to take on that lovely honey colour that we usually associate with mid-summer.

The Met Office have said we are on track to have the driest Spring in over 100 years.

So, should you water your lawn to help it through a dry spell, or is it better to let Mother Nature 'do her thing"?

Here's our advice...

💦 Established lawns generally cope well with dry conditions and quickly recover their colour after rainfall. If you prefer your lawn to look lush and verdant, and providing there are no water use restrictions in place, then go ahead and deploy the sprinklers.

💦 Newly laid turf and recently overseeded lawns MUST be kept moist so that the plants can establish.

💦 If you have applied granular lawn feed, double check the instructions regarding watering. Most proprietary lawn feeds must be watered in, whilst professional grade fertilisers can often wait for rain. Don't guess! always check!

If you do decide to water your lawn, avoid irrigating in the heat of the day - most of the moisture will be lost to evaporation. Instead, give the grass a good soaking either late evening or early morning.

Apply enough water so that it can sink deep into the soil to reach the roots. Consider using a wetting agent to improve effectiveness.

If you have any questions at all about watering your grass, your UKLCA lawn care professional will be able to give you some personalised advise based on the condition of your lawn, the soil type in your garden and your own personal lawn care goals.

Temperatures of 14 degrees Celsius in York today which means any healthy lawns will probably still be growing! 😲🏜

We mowed this lawn yesterday, which is the latest we've mowed a domestic lawn.🌱

Going by the calendar we suspect it's probably going to be our last mow of the year, although if these mild temperatures continue we might be looking at continuing. 🤷‍♂️

If you need any help mowing while you prepare for Christmas we can help.🎅🌲
