The Voices of Retail 2026 report is out, and one finding stands out: 71% of UK retailers describe their business as growing or stable right now.

❓A question we get asked a lot: “What shopfitting considerations are essential for meeting food safety regulations?”

It’s a great question - and one that’s become even more important since regulations tightened in recent years. Getting this wrong isn’t just about fines. It’s about staying open.

After 20+ years working with food retailers, we’ve learned that building compliance into the design from day one is always cheaper than retrofitting it later. Here’s what we focus on:

➡️ Surface materials - Non-porous and easily cleanable. Stainless steel for prep areas, sealed finishes for displays
➡️ Temperature zoning - Clear separation between ambient, chilled, and frozen areas, both for compliance and customer flow
➡️ Workflow design - One-way movement from delivery to customer minimises cross-contamination risk
➡️ Hand-wash provision - Positioned correctly throughout the space, not just where it’s convenient

One thing that catches people out more than almost anything else? Floor drainage around refrigerated units. Condensation pools are a surprisingly common reason for failed inspections.

There’s also been increased focus on allergen product storage - a change that affects layout planning more than many businesses initially realise.
