On January 29, 2019 the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture by Adjaye Associates, The Freelon Group (Now part of Perkins+Will), Davis Brody Bond and SmithGroup, was awarded a 2019 Institute Honour Award for Architecture from the AIA.



The awards program celebrates the best contemporary architecture and highlights the many ways buildings and spaces can improve lives. This year, nine buildings were selected by AIA's five-person jury of architects and academics, and were awarded for their "sense of place and purpose, ecology, environmental sustainability and history".
