Their qualifications are now recorded in a unified digital registry through the SafetyPass Digital Training Card, which documents both the SafetyPass programmes completed by each employee and any additional training provided by the employer. Preventive Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Elastomeric Bridge Bearings

HiSCS undertook the preventive maintenance program for the elastomeric bearings of a vehicular cantilever box-girder bridge, carrying out a series of maintenance and repair works aimed at enhancing their performance, durability, and long-term reliability.

The works included the thorough cleaning of all bearing surfaces and the removal of accumulated dirt, dust, and debris. Protective measures were also implemented to prevent future material buildup and improve resistance to environmental exposure, including the installation of galvanized steel sheets at selected locations.

To enhance corrosion protection, oxidation was removed from the metal anchoring plates, and a polyurethane coating was applied to restore and improve the durability of the metal surfaces. In addition, all deteriorated Class 8.8 bolts were replaced with new galvanized Class 10.9 high-strength bolts, improving both structural integrity and corrosion resistance.

These interventions not only restored the bearings to an improved operational condition but also significantly enhanced their resilience against environmental and mechanical deterioration. As a result, the long-term serviceability, safety, and reliability of the structure have been strengthened, while future maintenance needs have been reduced, supporting sustainable performance throughout the bridge's design life.

Pull-Out Testing of Anchor Bars at Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos"

HiSCS successfully carried out the pull-out testing program for the passive support system of the utility tunnel as part of the overall Airport Expansion Program “Design & Construction for the Multi-Storey Car Park (MSP) and NW Apron (NWA).
The retaining system incorporated by Ø28 mm grouted soil nails, designed to provide passive reinforcement of the retained soil mass. The grouted soil nail consists of a steel bar installed in a drilled borehole permanently bonded to the surrounding soil using cement grout and the bearing assembly at the excavation surface. This type of soil nails are classified as passive reinforcement systems because they become effective only when the surrounding soil tends to deform, thereby mobilizing the bond stresses between the bar, grout, and soil.
The pull-out testing were conducted to assess the mechanical performance of the nails under tensile loading and to validate the geotechnical design predictions regarding the load-bearing capacity and failure limits of the nailing system. These tests are essential for validating that the installed nails meet the required performance criteria and provide the intended level of stability and safety for the excavation support system.
Testing was performed using a 200-ton hollow type hydraulic jack with a maximum stroke of 150 mm, enabling the controlled application of tensile loads while accurately monitoring the displacement response of the anchor bars throughout the loading process.
The successful completion of the testing campaign confirmed the performance of the installed anchorage system and validated the geotechnical design parameters adopted for the project.

Bridge Jacking and Bearing Retrofitting of Rawda and University Bridges, Kuwait City

HiSCS is involved in the jacking and lifting of two (2) bridges at Interchange No. 19 – Rawda Bridge and Interchange No. 20 – University Bridge on the 4th Ring Road in Kuwait City.

Both bridges are vehicular overpasses, each with a length of 220 m and a width of 12 m. They each consist of thirteen (13) spans in total: twelve (12) spans of 15.2 m and one (1) central span of 38 m. The superstructure comprises simply supported steel beams, five (5) per span, connected by cross beams and bracings and seated on steel bearings (260 units per bridge in total) of obsolete technology, as both bridges were erected in 1978. The bearings are longitudinally sliding guided on one side and fixed on the other.

The retrofitting works aim to improve the sliding capacity of the expansion bearings, as originally designed, allowing them to accommodate the service movements of the superstructure, primarily the thermal expansion and contraction of the steel beams, while eliminating stress concentrations in the deck slabs. Recent inspections revealed that the bearings had become seized and were no longer capable of sliding. To restore their functionality, the bridge was lifted by no more than 10 mm, and self-lubricating PTFE (Teflon) sheets together with stainless steel plates of appropriate dimensions were inserted between the bearing sliding surfaces. This intervention reduced the high coefficient of friction and thereby improved the sliding performance of the bearings.

Eight (8) hydraulic jacks, each with a lifting capacity of 200 tones and a maximum stroke of 20 mm, were used to uplift and support the superstructure during the bearing rehabilitation works.

HiSCS was involved in the structural modelling, lifting design, and development of the work methodology, as well as in supervising the works executed through our Kuwaiti partner, ANA.

Jacking & Lifting of Corinthos Canal Bridge for Bearings Replacement

HiSCS has recently performed the jacking and lifting of the Corinthos canal (Isthmus) bridge, an iconic and of strategic importance cantilevered vehicular bridge.
The bridge has been erected back in 1996. It consists of 2 branches, each having 3 spans (max span 110m) and a total length of 190m. The superstructure is supported at piers by free sliding pot having a vertical capacity of 82000KN and an allowable sliding in both longitudinal and transversal direction of ±400mm.
The basic dimensions of these bearings were 2020x2020x219mm, weighing more than 4.5 tons each.

Among other reasons, the recent monitoring studies did reveal that the bearings were likely to not slide at all (stacked). In addition, their sliding material is considered obsolete not covered by the modern EN standards. The seismic isolation design specified the use of new sliding anti-seismic bearings having a curved sliding surface (commonly known as Friction Pendulum Systems – FPS). These devices consist of a concave slider (top plate) whose radius of curvature imposes the period of oscillation and accommodates the horizontal displacement and the lower plate with a secondary concave sliding surface that permits rotation. The bearing behaves like a pendulum because of the re-centering mechanisms that keep the superstructure almost centered after an earthquake. The new bearings have a vertical capacity of 70000ΚΝ and sliding allowance in both directions ±400mm. Their basic dimensions were 1890x1890x220mm, with weight about 3.2 tons each.

Eight jacks’ of 1000 tons lifting capacity each with locking rings and spherical heads were used considering that the bridge during lifting process should always remain open to traffic < 26 tons vehicles without the use of temporary support (lack of space).
HiSCS executed all stages of jacking-lifting and replacement works in all 4 piers. The average time per jacking location was about 15 working days.

Considering the existing pot and new anti-seismic surface sliders among the biggest and heaviest bearings in the world as well as the strategic importance of this bridge, HiSCS faced challenges beyond any previous experience. It is well known that the lifting and jacking of any bridge requires a unique approach and inventiveness with on-the-spot decisions and concepts affecting significantly the completion of work.

Delivering Critical Bridge Maintenance Under Traffic Conditions

Our team successfully performed the urgent replacement of a deteriorated elastomeric expansion joint on a high-traffic bridge serving as the main access route to major industrial facilities and freight operations.
The existing expansion joint had reached an extended stage of deterioration, creating significant risks to both the bridge's structural performance and operational reliability. Despite challenging site conditions and the need to maintain continuous traffic operations, the works were delivered safely, efficiently, and within an accelerated schedule. Careful planning and coordinated ex*****on enabled us to minimize disruption to freight movements and the traveling public while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards.
Projects like this demonstrate that effective infrastructure maintenance is not only about repairing assets, it's about preserving resilience, ensuring operational continuity, and protecting the critical networks that support economic activity.

Smart Bridges Project Presentation

Following the Project Presentation Event, organized by the Technical Chamber of Greece, on the 9th of June 2026, we are proud to highlight our contribution to this pioneering national initiative for the continuous monitoring of bridge infrastructure across Greece.

The project introduced advanced Real-Time Structural Health Monitoring (RTSHM) technologies to a network of 271 bridges, creating a digital ecosystem where specialized sensors, fiber-optic systems, IoT technologies, and advanced data analytics provide continuous insight into structural performance. By monitoring parameters such as strain, vibration, loading, and environmental conditions in real time, the system enables data-driven maintenance strategies and supports the early identification and prevention of potential issues.

As part of this large-scale effort, HiSCS carried out extensive survey and inspection activities using laser scanners, high-resolution imaging systems, and drones to develop detailed digital models and as-built documentation for each bridge. More than 2 TB of data were collected, processed, and evaluated, forming a critical foundation for structural assessment and long-term monitoring. Our inspection teams also assessed the condition of the bridges, documenting deficiencies and supporting the structural analysis and classification of each asset.

The successful delivery of the project required the coordinated effort of multidisciplinary teams, including surveyors, draftsmen, inspection engineers, installation specialists, traffic coordinators, special vehicle operators, electricians, and technicians, working together across the country to complete the survey, inspection, and monitoring implementation phases.

We are honored to have contributed our expertise throughout the project lifecycle, from data acquisition and condition assessment to the deployment and integration of monitoring technologies. This initiative marks an important milestone in the development of smarter, safer, and more resilient infrastructure networks, helping address the challenges of aging assets while strengthening their ability to respond to future demands and climate-related pressures.

Bridge Maintenance - Urgent Elastomeric Expansion Joint Replacement

Our team completed the emergency replacement of a critically deteriorated elastomeric expansion joint mat, on a heavily trafficked bridge, serving as the primary access corridor to a major industrial and logistics hub with continuous heavy truck circulation.

The existing joint had reached an advanced state of deterioration, posing significant risks to the structural integrity and operational reliability of the bridge. Immediate intervention was essential to prevent water infiltration, progressive deck deterioration, increased dynamic loading impacts, and potential disruptions to a critical transportation route supporting regional industrial activity.

Despite highly demanding traffic conditions and continuous operational constraints, the project was executed safely, efficiently, and within an accelerated timeframe, ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow and minimizing disruption to commercial transport operations and the traveling public.

Working at Height – General Applications: Training Course Highlights

Οur team had the opportunity to participate in the specialized training course “Working at Height – General Applications.” The training was conducted by the Hellenic Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (ELINYAE), the main institution in Greece responsible for collecting and disseminating knowledge on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). With extensive experience in high risk work environments and accredited instructors, the institute provided high quality, up to date guidance based on current legislation, best practices, and real world industry standards. The course was designed with a balanced combination of theoretical and practical learning.

In the theoretical section of the course, participants explored key legislation and safety regulations related to working at height, along with risk assessment procedures and hazard identification. They also learned how to properly select, inspect, and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE), and reviewed best practices for the safe use of ladders, scaffolding, and fall prevention systems.

The hands on portion allowed participants to practice the correct use of safety harnesses and fall arrest systems while performing simulated work at height tasks under instructor supervision. During these exercises, they familiarized themselves with rescue procedures and emergency protocols, building confidence through real life scenarios designed to replicate everyday field conditions.

The “Working at Height – General Applications” training course aimed to strengthen our awareness, knowledge, and hands on skills for performing tasks safely and efficiently when working above ground level. It reflects our company’s ongoing dedication to creating a safe workplace and continuously enhancing the professional skills of our people. By investing in comprehensive training, we ensure that everyone returns home safe at the end of the day—and that we uphold the highest standards in all operations involving elevated work.
