The Holy Monastery of Platytera

Just a short distance from Corfu Old Town, the historic Monastery of Platytera was founded in 1743 and has been deeply connected with the history of Corfu and the Kapodistrias family. Rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1798, it evolved into a vital spiritual and cultural landmark of the island.

Beyond its serene atmosphere and remarkable post-Byzantine icons, the monastery holds profound national significance as the final resting place of Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first Governor of independent Greece and other historical figures. It remains a peaceful sanctuary where faith, art, and Corfiot heritage beautifully intertwine.

The Byzantine Museum Antivouniotissa of Corfu – a hidden gem in the Old Town.

Located inside the historic Church of the Virgin Antivouniotissa, the Byzantine Museum of Corfu houses an exceptional collection of Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons, some dating back to the 15th century.

What makes this place even more fascinating is that the church is still occasionally used for worship - it holds a service only twice a year. In the yard, you can also see an old tomb, adding another layer of history and mystery to this remarkable place.
