Lumi Beach Club, Gili Trawangan.

A hospitality renovation translating traditional Indonesian textile culture into a contemporary interior language.

The project forms the first phase of a wider renovation for Lumi Hotel, building on the original architecture by Andra Matin. Our work focused on reimagining the interiors while staying close to the spirit of the original concept.

The design draws from traditional batik and ikat patterns found across the Indonesian archipelago. These references were reinterpreted into custom fabrics, rugs, ceramics and tiles, produced in collaboration with local craftspeople.

Bespoke furniture, fittings, lighting and textiles carry the same language through the beach club’s bar, retail areas and restrooms. Details that connect the space to Indonesia’s culture of pattern, craft and making.

Founded in Bali, we are a concept-led architecture and design practice with over a decade of experience creating spaces across tropical landscapes.

Our work has grown from Bali and across Indonesia into international projects and collaborations, spanning private residences, villas, resorts, restaurants, commercial spaces and destination-led developments.

With a deep understanding of climate, culture and landscape, every project begins with place. The way people move, gather, rest and experience a space shapes our work from concept to realisation.

We design for tropical environments, where architecture needs to respond to heat, light, rain, ventilation and outdoor living, while creating spaces that feel grounded, lasting and specific to their setting.

Mulai Villa sits within a rugged coastal landscape a short walk from the white sands of Serangan Beach in Lombok.

The architecture draws from the steeply pitched roof forms of Sade village, one of Lombok’s most well-known examples of traditional Sasak architecture. These forms were carefully reinterpreted for contemporary living while maintaining a strong connection to the local architectural language. Grass roofs, clay and earthen wall finishes and locally sourced stone create a palette of natural, breathable materials suited to the island’s humid tropical climate.

The steep roof form continues internally, creating generous volumes that support passive cooling and efficient water drainage during heavy tropical rains. Architecture that responds to its climate as much as its landscape.

Designed to establish a distinct identity within Canggu’s competitive culinary landscape, while responding to the social pulse of Bali’s day-to-night lifestyle.

An interior architecture renovation of an existing building, often a more complex undertaking than building new. Working within the constraints of the existing structure, spaces were remodelled to shift naturally throughout the day. A front terrace and sunken lounge for daytime gathering, the central dining room and bars transitioning into more animated evening settings.

The concept draws from Mediterranean coastal architecture, balanced with a post-modern approach inspired by Milan’s experimental design culture, and a palette of materials and craft local to Bali and Indonesia.

Richard is one of our Architects, adaptable across every stage of a project, from concept to completion.

From Ende in East Nusa Tenggara, he earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Petra University in 2022. He worked at Mdesign Archiplan in Surabaya before joining Design Assembly.

His rendering and detailing have elevated our in-house visualisation capabilities, allowing us to communicate our ideas and creative direction to clients better than ever.

Throughout his time at Design Assembly, he has grown into a key Project Architect in the studio, playing an important role in our residential and hospitality projects, from concept and development through to construction and completion.

Boni Beach Resort sits just back from the shoreline of Serangan Beach in South Lombok.

The architectural concept draws from the traditions of Sasak villages found across the island. Grass roofs, timber cladding and natural stone reference the materials of traditional settlements, reinterpreted within a contemporary coastal setting. Earthy tones and natural materials anchor the project quietly to its surroundings.

Craft traditions from across Lombok run through the interiors. Ikat textiles from Pringgasela village, Lombok pottery and Ketak woven baskets. Details that connect the building to the culture and making traditions of its place.

Every site we work with has its own logic, its own conditions. Topography, vegetation, light, the way the land sits. These conditions help shape the concept and direction of every project from the outset.

Putri is a Senior Architect and lead designer within the studio. She brings both design thinking and technical depth to every project she leads, playing a key role in how we bring work together, from early concept through to the people and processes that give it form.

Before joining Design Assembly, she was part of the Potato Head team, working closely with Andra Matin Studio and OMA on the design and delivery of Desa Potato Head.
