At JIA Curated 2026, not everything in the Second Growth pavilion was ironwood.

Designed by Alexis Dornier for Kaltimber, the pavilion was largely built around reclaimed ironwood, with Kitaru contributing two decking areas made from reclaimed Bangkirai.

It was a chance to put this often-overlooked hardwood into an architectural setting and let the material speak for itself — through its grain, texture, warmth and the way it settles naturally into the landscape.

A small part of the pavilion, but an important one: sometimes the best way to appreciate a material is simply to give it room to be seen.

A little colour can change the entire mood of a space.

This vintage wooden panel carries its past openly: layers of faded yellow, red, blue and natural timber, worn back by time into a palette that no new finish could quite reproduce.

In a Bali villa, it becomes more than decoration. Use it as a bold accent on a wall, incorporate it into custom joinery, or let its weathered character contrast against clean contemporary lines.

For interior designers, pieces like this are an invitation to work with what already has a story—and make that story part of the architecture.

Some pieces of timber make an entrance.

This large teak beam has just arrived at Kitaru Lumberyard, bringing with it the kind of presence that only comes from substantial, solid timber. Before it becomes part of a structure, a piece like this has a journey of its own — from the yard, to the workshop, to the architecture it was chosen for.

It started with a stack of Sirap Ulin.

Then came the structure, the rhythm of the timber, the openings between the trees — and slowly, piece by piece, the roof found its place.

For the Umah Living × Kata Design Studio pavilion at JIA Curated 2026, Kitaru’s Ulin shingles became part of something much bigger than a roof. They helped shape a space where architecture, material and landscape could speak to one another.

Brought together on site by Kayu Construction, the finished pavilion was one of those collaborations where the real story only becomes visible once everything comes together.

And now, after five days at JIA, we can finally look back and say: it was worth seeing come to life.

There's something about watching the sun disappear over Pengembak Beach after a full day of conversations, ideas, and good people that makes it hard to leave.
