Ireland has the most expensive household electricity in the European Union.

That's not an opinion; it's Eurostat.
At 40.42c per kWh including VAT and levies, we pay more than any other EU country. The EU average is 28.96c.

Ireland — 40.42c
Germany — 38.69c
Belgium — 34.99c
Denmark — 33.12c

For the average household here, that works out at roughly €480 a year more than the EU average. Same kettle, same washing machine, same immersion, just a more expensive grid behind them.

Here's the part worth sitting with: you have no control over the unit price.
None of us do.

It's set by wholesale markets, grid costs and levies.

What you can control is how many units you're buying in the first place.

We hear this objection a lot! Panels don't perform in December like they do in June. Output drops; the days are short. That's true.

But most people misunderstand what a battery is for. They think it stores spare sunshine. That's one job.

The other one, the job that carries a house through January, is choosing WHEN you buy your electricity. Charge when the grid is cheap, run the house off it when it isn't. Nothing to do with the sun.

Which is why a battery:
- Works in December as well as June
-Works on a north-facing or shaded roof, because it doesn't depend on generation
-Shifts your usage automatically; you change nothing about your routine

And since June 2026, Irish electricity prices can change every half hour on a dynamic tariff. That makes this a much bigger deal than it used to be.

Electric Ireland raised residential electricity by 8% and gas by 7.7% from 1 July 2026, their first increase since October 2022.

For the average customer, that's:
⚡ €2.66 a week, about €138 a year on electricity
🔥 Another €2.25 a week on gas, about €117 a year
Three things worth finding:
📊 Your annual kWh usage (not your euro figure, the units)
🕕 When you're actually using it, evening peak or spread out?
🧾 Your standing charge, which you pay regardless

Built after 2021? The grant rule nobody mentions until it's too late. 👇

The SEAI Solar PV grant is only open to homes built and occupied before 2021, it's checked against your MPRN. After that date, there's no domestic grant. Full stop.

But newer home ≠ no case for solar:
☀️ 0% VAT on supply + install (same contractor, same contract)
⚡ Your supplier still pays you for exported electricity
🔋 First €400/yr of that export income is tax-free, now extended to the end of 2028

And if you ARE pre-2021, the one that really stings:
❗ Your grant must be approved BEFORE the works start. Not during. Not after.
