Coffey and Uisce ร‰ireann Irish Water have won the Innovation in Construction Award (Company Turnover โ‚ฌ20m-โ‚ฌ200m) at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards for the Enfield Wastewater Treatment Plant project.

The award recognises the successful delivery of Sludge Drying Reed Bed (SDRB) technology, an innovative nature-based solution that replaces energy-intensive mechanical sludge treatment with a process driven by percolation, evapotranspiration and microbial mineralisation.

The benefits are significant:
ยท Up to 98% reduction in sludge volume
ยท Elimination of chemical dosing and mechanical dewatering
ยท Removal of more than 155 HGV movements annually
ยท Reduced operational and environmental impact

A key factor in the project's success was the willingness to challenge conventional approaches. Early feasibility assessment, detailed evaluation of treatment options and strong collaboration between Coffey, Uisce ร‰ireann and our specialist partners helped deliver a solution that is both practical and sustainable.

Galway, which brought together representatives from across the sector to share knowledge and discuss approaches to project delivery, safety and innovation.

Paul Daly, HSQE Director at Coffey, presented on Coffeyโ€™s Last Planner system, highlighting how collaborative planning and structured coordination can support safer and more efficient delivery across live project environments.

Coftec's Managing Director Joe Gleeson and Project Manager Ahmed Bakhiet presented on innovation through modular systems. Their presentation outlined the value that Coftec's innovative modular treatment solutions bring to their clients in terms of cost certainty and value, programme, health & safety, footprint and carbon. Through its value engineering ethos, Coftec provides solutions that bring real value to its customers.

The event also featured presentations from Uisce ร‰ireann teams and industry partners covering quality, BIM development, sustainability, AI and innovation across infrastructure delivery.

Coffey participated in the 2026 COPE Galway Charity Golf Event at Galway Golf Club on Friday 15 May, alongside golfers, sponsors and supporters from across the region for a day centred on fundraising and community support.

The event welcomed 132 golfers and raised โ‚ฌ17,391 for the important services COPE Galway provides throughout the community.

Our Operations & Maintenance function plays a critical role in supporting clients long after construction is complete. Coffey teams currently operate 67 live treatment plants nationwide, delivering drinking water and wastewater services on behalf of Uisce ร‰ireann Irish Water, Group Water Schemes and industrial clients. This portfolio spans drinking water, wastewater and industrial treatment assets, operated across a diverse range of sites.

In 2025, our O&M portfolio treated over 4.8 million cubic metres of water and wastewater, including 2.43 million mยณ of drinking water and 2.43 million mยณ of wastewater. This scale of operation is underpinned by experienced operational teams, structured maintenance regimes and a disciplined approach to compliance and risk management.

Day-to-day, our focus is on the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of critical infrastructure. This includes planned and reactive maintenance, continuous monitoring of treatment processes, structured incident response procedures, and the use of digital systems to provide real-time visibility of plant performance. These measures support proactive intervention, minimise downtime, and maintain regulatory confidence across live operational sites.

By working closely with clients and stakeholders and continually seeking to improve asset performance throughout its lifecycle, Coffey supports dependable service delivery for the communities these assets serve.

Coffey has successfully retained ISO 50001:2018 certification following our latest Energy Management Systems surveillance audit by NSAI.

This result reflects the collective effort across our teams to improve energy management standards and support more sustainable and efficient operations throughout the business.

Coffey is continuing to make progress on the ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฅ๐ ๐š๐ง๐ฒ ๐ญ๐จ ๐๐ฅ๐š๐œ๐ค๐ฅ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฉ๐ž๐ฅ ๐‘๐จ๐š๐ ๐ˆ๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐’๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฆ๐ž, a project that will support safer, more connected travel for the local community.

๐’๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง 1 is now substantially complete. Recent works include a new HRA asphalt ramp at the entrance to Littlebrook Estate, along with finished driveway and side road tie-ins. This builds on the earlier reopening to two-way traffic and the delivery of improved pedestrian and cycling facilities.

๐’๐ž๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง 2 is advancing well, with the current focus on accommodation works and utility infrastructure. Key milestones include:

โ— Nearing completion of wall construction and stone masonry, including c.300m of stone-faced retaining and block walls.

โ— Installation of 200m of drainage and sewer infrastructure at depths up to 3.5m.

โ— Over 7km of new utility ducting installed.

โ— New ESB infrastructure now live, with all properties transferred to the new network and redundant poles removed.

โ— Installation of new public lighting columns along the route.

โ— Completion of new 350m watermain, with property connections now completed.

Weโ€™re working closely with utility providers to coordinate the transition to new networks, enabling the safe removal of existing services ahead of road construction.

This project is a vital step in enhancing local infrastructure, with phased delivery continuing through to mid-2026.
