That gap, between raw water and a glass from the tap, is where Coffey's Operations & Maintenance team does its work, and Lough Talt is one of the clearest examples of what that work means for a community.

𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐭 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐓𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐭

Our team operates and maintains the plant that turns Lough Talt's raw water into clean, safe drinking water for approximately 13,000 people across South Sligo and East Mayo, reaching towns and villages including Tubbercurry, Ballymote, Coolaney, Achonry, Curry, Bunnanadden and Doocastle, among many others. It's a supply with history: before an upgrade lifted a long-running boil water notice in 2020, the scheme had spent years on the EPA's Remedial Action List. Day-to-day operation now is what keeps that compliance in place.

𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲

Getting from lake to tap reliably takes more than treatment on paper. The plant treats up to 8 million litres of water a day using chloramination disinfection, making Lough Talt one of only two public water schemes in Ireland to use this process to control trihalomethane (THM) formation in the network. Our teams monitor that process around the clock, maintain the plant's critical infrastructure, and respond in real time to changes in raw water conditions and demand, so that supply never becomes something a community has to think about.

Right now, somewhere between Tubbercurry and Kilmacteige, someone is filling a kettle without a second thought. That's the job done right.

Today, Coffey staff are getting involved in , raising awareness for the incredible work of The Lighthouse Charity, which provides free emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families.

To mark the week, we welcomed a purple coffee truck from Latte Da to our head office with cupcake deliveries to our other sites and offices, proving that there is more than one way to go purple.

We also welcomed an insightful talk from Brian Shanks from The Lighthouse, highlighting the vital services and supports the charity provides.

Support matters, even when it is not always visible.

Following last night's Women in Construction Awards, we are delighted to celebrate the success of our own Chere Daniels, who was named winner of the Excellence in Construction Management Award.

As a Site Engineer on the Castletroy Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Project in Limerick, Chere is helping to deliver critical infrastructure that will support future growth in the region. Her success reflects the dedication, expertise, and professionalism she brings to the project every day, helping to deliver infrastructure that will make a lasting difference for the communities it serves.

The Women in Construction Awards celebrate the achievements of women across the sector and the positive impact they continue to make throughout the industry. Recognition such as this helps showcase the talent, commitment and expertise that are shaping the future of construction.

At Coffey, our Operations & Maintenance team manages critical wastewater infrastructure on behalf of municipal and private clients across Ireland. Our role is simple: to keep assets performing safely, efficiently and compliantly, protecting communities and the environment every day.

We operate and maintain 29 wastewater treatment plants and 19 pumping stations for municipal networks, while also maintaining a further 58 pumping stations for private clients across Ireland.

Each site has its own design, loading and environmental sensitivities. What matters is consistent, compliant performance, every day, in all conditions.

𝐄𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐰𝐓𝐏, 𝐂𝐨. 𝐌𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡
Ireland’s largest reedbed wastewater treatment plant recently received the Innovation in Construction award at the ICE Awards 2026.

The site uses 11 sludge drying reed beds, eliminating chemical additives, reducing energy demand by over 48,750 kWh annually and removing approximately 155 HGV movements from Irish roads each year.

These systems are not passive. Performance depends on carefully managed loading cycles, biological activity and long‑term bed conditioning. That day‑to‑day operational understanding is what keeps the system working as designed.

Across the North West In locations including Tubbercurry, Grange and Strandhill, Coffey operates wastewater infrastructure that varies in age, process design and receiving environment, from inland systems to coastal discharges.

Last weekend, James Sutor, Electrical Project Engineer based in our Burntwood office, took on the Lake District Marathon Mighty Hike in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.

James completed the demanding route alongside his girlfriend, and together they raised £1,350 for the charity - a fantastic collective effort for an important cause.

Macmillan provides vital medical, emotional and practical support to people living with cancer. From diagnosis through treatment and beyond, the charity helps individuals understand their options, access the right support, and cope with the challenges that cancer can bring at every stage of the journey.

Taking on an endurance challenge like the Mighty Hike reflects what Do the Right Thing means at Coffey - stepping up for others, committing to positive action, and supporting causes that make a real difference to individuals and communities.

Well done to James on a significant achievement, and thank you for representing Coffey while supporting such an important cause.

Works on Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road are progressing well as part of Galway City Council's Active Travel programme, focused on improving movement and accessibility through these communities.

Coffey is delivering a range of infrastructure upgrades designed to support safer and more efficient journeys for residents, commuters and students travelling to Atlantic Technological University. The scheme, supported by the National Transport Authority and the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund, includes:

• Segregated pedestrian and cycle routes to support safer and more accessible active travel through the area.

• Upgraded bus stops and improved crossing points to enhance accessibility and connectivity for public transport users and pedestrians.

• Improved junction layouts designed to support safer traffic movement and better visibility for all road users.

• Road resurfacing and landscaping works to improve the overall quality, appearance and long-term usability of the route.

These improvements are helping to enhance connectivity across Ballybane and Castlepark while contributing to a safer environment for all road users.
We are now nearing substantial completion, with final works expected to conclude in the coming weeks.
