BEYOND SERVICE — THE BIGGEST BATTLE CAME AFTER

For more than two decades, service was a huge part of my identity.

I served in the Irish Defence Forces, completing 8 overseas operational deployments — 7 to Lebanon and 1 to Kosovo — alongside high-intensity security operations within the State.

My career included mechanised infantry, sniper and Ranger training, parachuting, Advanced Unarmed Combat Instructor, MOWAG Armoured Personnel Carrier Instructor and CRC — Crowd & Riot Control Instructor, alongside countless other military and instructional courses.

I later had the privilege of becoming an instructor myself — passing knowledge and experience to others preparing for leadership and demanding operational environments.

I understood pressure. Risk. Adversity. Mission.

But perhaps the biggest challenge came afterwards.

My trauma didn't begin in uniform. There was childhood trauma long before I joined the military.

Then came the cumulative effects of operational service.

Later, working as a frontline medic during COVID added occupational trauma.

Then I broke my back.

I went from being highly physically capable to rehabilitation and learning to walk properly again.

Eventually, everything accumulated:

Childhood trauma. Operational trauma. Occupational trauma. Medical trauma.

I was hospitalised and received a prognosis of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD).

That began another mission:

Recovery.

I've learned that strength isn't always about enduring more.

Sometimes strength means acknowledging you're struggling. Sometimes it means accepting help. Sometimes victory is simply getting up tomorrow and moving forward.

I'm still rebuilding — physically and mentally.

But that journey has given me another purpose.

Through Safety and Security Solutions, I'm committed to advocating for veteran mental-health awareness and creating opportunities through upskilling, training, networking, mentorship and pathways into civilian employment.

Veterans possess extraordinary experience, discipline, resilience and transferable skills. Sometimes they simply need help recognising their value again.

Leaving the military shouldn't mean losing your identity, community, brotherhood or purpose.

We were taught never to abandon the person beside us.

That principle shouldn't end when service does.

You served. You still belong. Your experience still has value.

Perhaps one of our most important missions after service is simple:

Reach back and help the next person forward.

AS A MAN THINKETH — FROM THE BATTLEFIELD TO THE BOARDROOM

The older I become, the more I understand the truth behind James Allen’s As a Man Thinketh.

“A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.”

Having spent much of my adult life in military service, including overseas operational deployments, instructional roles and later working across corporate security, risk and leadership environments, I have learned that one battlefield follows you everywhere:

The battlefield of the mind.

A uniform does not create discipline.
A rank does not create leadership.
A title does not create character.

Those things are developed internally, long before they are demonstrated externally.

Military service taught me that when pressure arrives, we rarely rise magically to the occasion. We rely upon the discipline, training, habits and mindset we have developed beforehand.

The corporate world is different, but the principle remains remarkably similar.

Whether facing operational uncertainty, business risk, difficult decisions, personal adversity or responsibility for others, leadership begins with command of self.

There have been mountains and valleys throughout my own journey.

Success teaches us something, but adversity has often taught me more.

There are times when life strips away things we believed defined us — position, certainty, relationships, status or plans for the future.

What remains is character.

James Allen understood that our thoughts influence our actions; our repeated actions become habits; and those habits help shape the person we eventually become.

That is why I believe resilience is not simply the ability to endure hardship.

It is the ability to remain purposeful through it.

From military service to the boardroom, one principle has remained constant:

Control what you can.
Accept what you cannot.
Maintain your discipline.
Look after those beside you.
And keep moving forward.

Circumstances will change.

Titles will change.

The battlefield will change.

Character must remain.

As a man thinketh, so he becomes.

The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate freedom, service, and the enduring values that unite democratic nations.

Looking back, I have many fond memories of working alongside U.S. forces during joint NATO operations in Kosovo in 2010. Those experiences reinforced the professionalism, trust, and mutual respect that come from working together in demanding environments with a shared mission.

What an amazing week spent with the fantastic team at PayPal Ireland delivering First Aid Training.

The enthusiasm, engagement, and positive energy throughout every session were infectious. If only we could bottle it and sell it!

Accidents can happen anywhere, at any time, and while we can't always prevent them, we can be prepared to respond. That's why first aid training is so important. The confidence to step forward, assess a situation, provide immediate care, and potentially save a life is a skill that benefits everyone.

From CPR and emergency response to managing workplace injuries, every participant embraced the learning experience and demonstrated a real commitment to creating a safer workplace for their colleagues.
