Happy Christmas from all at VEON

Veon ecologists undertaking a Mammal Survey in County Kildare encountered a variety of different species including a shy Otter, a Jay, Hare, deer badger, fox and pheasant.

The Irish countryside is rich in wildlife, with foxes, hares, and badgers moving quietly through farmland at dusk. Along streams, otters hunt, and woodlands host red squirrels, bats, and countless insects that sustain the wider ecosystem. Mammal surveys play an important role in recording and helping to protect species which contribute to the living tapestry which inspires us all.

Projects that may impact the existing environment often require a mammal survey. These projects can include: Afforestation proposals, Thinning and Clearfelling operations, Road and infrastructural developments, Agriculture and land clearance, Wind-energy developments, Flood alleviation schemes, and Public and Private property developments.

A new Benchmark for Make-A-Wish Woodland

For over three decades, Make-A-Wish Ireland has brought sunshine into the lives of over 3,500 courageous children across the country. These wishes offer respite from hospital routines, doctors' visits, and treatments, instilling joy into young lives. The charity, a registered non-profit in Ireland, stands as an example of transparency and accountability, having earned the esteemed "triple lock" certification from Charities Institute Ireland.

A generous benefactor who wishes to remain anonymous, granted a legacy donation to Make-A-Wish Ireland so that the wishes of children living with life-threatening illnesses will continue. As a mark of gratitude to the anonymous donor, Susan McQuaid O'Dwyer, the CEO of Make-A-Wish Ireland, unveiled a bench to honour the donor in the Make-A-Wish Woodland in Richardstown, Co. Louth.

“This living native woodland will stand as a testament to the unbreakable spirit of the children and families we serve and this new bench will be used to reflect on the fragility of life and the wonderful generosity of caring people.”

Make-A-Wish already boasts an exemplary ESG program, fostering corporate partnerships with dedicated Irish businesses that passionately support and promote their life-transforming work. VEON, a company dedicated to forestry, ecology and the environment, were engaged to source, plant and manage 8,000 native Oak trees by Make-A-Wish at the designated site.

As the first charity partner of VEON's prestigious Climate Leadership Programme and one of the inaugural children's charities in Ireland to take affirmative environmental action, Make-A-Wish Ireland has laid the foundation for an even brighter, greener future. Embracing their sustainability charter, they ardently hope to invest in more woodland projects in the years ahead, leaving an enduring legacy for generations to cherish.

Veon constructs two bridges for forest road in a SAC sensitive area.

Veon foresters managed the construction of a significant forest road located south of Ballymote in Co. Sligo in a mixed soft wood and hardwood forest which was planted in 2000. The forest site is split by the Qwenbeg river and a smaller tributary river which fragments the site.
The Owenbeg is a tributary of the much larger Owenmore river which flows through the Special Area of Conservation of Temple House and Cloonacleigha Loughs SAC to join the Ballysadare river at Collooney.
Gaining access to these fragmented forest plots and navigating these crossing points was a serious challenge for the forest owners. Veon Forestry in conjunction with the Veon Ecology team concluded that free span bridges would provide the best option.
The rationale behind the decision to construct free span bridges took the size and sensitivity of the watercourse into account, combined with factoring the additional sensitivity of the site being upstream of the SAC. The less impact made on the river and riverbed the better - so the decision to span the two watercourses was made culminating in a first class forest road for the forest owner.

Veon Ornithologists encounter Treecreeper in Co. Westmeath

These tiny, brown-and-white birds cling to tree trunks, spiralling upward as they hunt insects hidden beneath the bark. Year-round residents in Ireland, treecreepers favour mature woodlands, parks, and gardens with old trees.

Though small, they play a big role in forest health by controlling insects that could harm oak, ash, and beech. Their presence also signals high-quality, biodiverse forests with healthy insect populations. Protecting their habitats supports nutrient cycling, ecosystem balance, and Ireland’s efforts to restore native woodlands—making treecreepers a small bird with a big impact.

This pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) encountered by Veon foresters in County Offaly, is one of the most important tree species for supporting biodiversity in Irish forests. This native oak provides habitat and food for an extraordinary range of wildlife — more species than any other native tree in Ireland. Its rough bark and sturdy branches host countless mosses, lichens, and fungi, while its leaves support hundreds of insect species, including many rare moths and beetles. These insects, in turn, attract birds such as t**s, warblers, and woodpeckers, creating a rich web of life. The acorns provide a valuable food source for mammals like red squirrels, badgers, and deer. As a long-lived tree, the pedunculate oak also helps maintain stable forest ecosystems over centuries, fostering soil health and ecological continuity. In essence, it acts as a keystone species, sustaining diverse and resilient woodlands.

The Return of the Oaks: Veon Reviving Ireland’s Natural Heritage in Co. Cavan

Veon manages this majestic stand of Oak in Co. Cavan which was planted 1989 and has been thinned once. New oak plantations are more than just beautiful woodlands. These young forests are powerhouses of biodiversity, creating vital habitats for countless native species. From the iconic jay, which helps spread acorns, to mosses, lichens, and insects that thrive in oak bark and leaf litter, these ecosystems hum with life.

Oak woodlands also play a key role in carbon capture, helping Ireland meet its climate goals by storing greenhouse gases and improving air quality. Their deep roots prevent soil erosion, regulate water cycles, and restore balance to landscapes once dominated by monoculture forestry.
By planting oak forests, Veon is not just growing trees — it is restoring and rebuilding an ancient natural network that supports wildlife, strengthens ecosystems, and reconnects people with the land.
