My biggest takeaway from Bloom this year wasn't a particular plant.

It wasn't a design trend.

It was the reminder that there is no such thing as the perfect garden.

Every show garden was different.

Every designer approached things differently.

Every space had its own personality.

Sometimes I think we spend too much time worrying about whether we're gardening "properly".

Gardens don't know what's written in gardening books.

They just need to work for the people who use them.

I actually think this is one of the biggest mistakes people make with raised beds 😄

When there’s too much bare soil, everything starts looking:
dry
weedy
patchy
disappointing

And people think they’ve failed.

But honestly?
Most raised beds do not need restarting.

They usually just need:
✔ feeding
✔ deeper watering
✔ more growing in them

Fast-growing veg completely changes the feeling of a raised bed very quickly.

Radish, rocket, lettuce, beetroot, dwarf beans and courgettes are all brilliant because they:
✔ grow quickly
✔ cover soil
✔ reduce weeds
✔ give quick wins

And quick wins matter in gardening.

Because confidence is usually the difference between someone continuing… or giving up altogether.

Gardens don’t know what’s written in gardening books

After years of teaching gardening, I think most people don’t need more information.

They need:
less pressure,
smaller starting points,
and confidence that grows slowly.

This autumn I’m opening the courtyard again for a series of seasonal workshops designed for overwhelmed gardeners who want a calmer, more enjoyable approach to gardening.

Everyone goes home with something similar but different — and that’s part of the magic.

Imagine being able to step outside and cut flowers for your kitchen table… not just once, but all through the summer.

That’s what most people want.

But what they don’t realise is — it’s not about planting more.

It’s about knowing what to do after things start growing.

Simple things like this make all the difference.

Most people aren’t getting it wrong…

If your garden feels like this… you’re not alone.

One part doing well, the other struggling…
and you’re left thinking you’ve done something wrong.

But most of the time, it’s not that at all.

It’s usually just one small issue that hasn’t been spotted — and once you know what to look for, everything starts to feel much more manageable.

That’s the bit people are missing.
Not effort… just clarity.

Most people I meet think they’re “useless” at gardening —
they’re not, they just haven’t been shown yet.

Most people arrive a bit unsure.

They’ve usually been gardening for a while — some things have worked, some things haven’t — but there’s still that feeling of:

“I’m not fully confident in what I’m doing.”

I see it all the time at the start of workshops.

People sit a bit back. Not too sure. Taking notes. Watching first before trying anything.

And then we start working through it step by step.

I show exactly what to do, and then you do it yourself.

Not watching from a distance — actually doing it.

As the workshop goes on, something shifts.

Questions start coming. People try things. They compare notes. There’s more laughter, more confidence, more “ohhh I get it now”.

And by the end, it’s very different to how it started.

People leave with plants, notes, and practical skills — but more than that, they leave feeling more confident than when they arrived.

That’s the bit that matters most.

Because it’s not really about doing everything perfectly in the garden.

It’s about feeling like you actually know what you’re doing when you go home.
