Our focus on aquatic invasive species continues this week.🌿

Invasive Spotlight Species #3: Curly Waterweed also known as Lagarosiphon major

This submerged, aquatic plant is found in inland surface waters. It has hollow, fragile (breaks on bending) and richly branched stems which measure up to 4.5 m long. It has dark green and translucent leaves which are strongly curved and spirally arranged around the stem. Flowers have not been recorded in Ireland. It can be confused with Elodea species., Egeria densa, and Hydrilla verticillata.

This plant reproduces from stem fragments. It forms dense canopies particularly during the winter months. Once established it grows vigorously and outcompetes native plant communities. By altering the habitat it alters the macroinvertebrate community in the area which may have knock on impacts for fish and other species. It interferes with navigation, angling and recreation.

The plant has been widely sold as an oxygenating plant for use in ponds or aquaria. When choosing plants for your garden pond

Lagarosiphon major has been spread vegetatively on boats and angling equipment. Remember to to prevent the spread of this plant.
