Something a little bit different today and a subject a bit more personal. Recently, I was asked to participate in contributing to a new journal on the science direct platform. The journal; The Encyclopedia of Renewable and Sustainable Materials, looks at the impact and use of sustainable and renewable materials & technology in architecture and other fields where it has an impact. In this segment of carbon footprint & Passive House we will look at insulation. Insulation is a key part in any passive house building. The thermal envelope is critical to ensuring a comfortable internal environment can be achieved. In colder areas of the world it is used to keep the heat within the structure and in passive house in particular reduce the heat loss through he thermal envelope. [ 549 more words ]

I wrote a piece recently about Carbon footprint and Passive House, you can find a link to that piece below. This post is damning for concrete as a construction material in this regard.

Concrete is an excellent material and has many versatile uses and is responsible for many amazing projects globally. However, as the report from architects journal indicates its a material that needs to establish a new mixture of ingredients in order to make it a sustainable choice for architects, engineers and designers going forward.

Check out the post by Architects Journal below:

Architects have been urged to reconsider their use of concrete after research found that cement – its key ingredient – was responsible for 8 per cent of global CO2 emissions

Following on from my previous post on Timber High-Rise Construction I want to talk a bit further about the carbon footprint, in particular relation to Passive House. In today's world carbon reduction is very much a hot topic at the current time. In a time when construction is ranked as one of the world’s least sustainable industries consuming about half of the world’s non-renewable resources it it is important to develop and advance the methods and means by which we select and use building materials and how we design, engineer and construct our architecture. Designing and constructing a passive house can be difficult. In the following list I have developed a quick check-list of the top ten 'do's' when developing a passive house project. These views are my own personal opinion of what basics need to be addressed when developing a passive house project. The list of course is non-exhaustive so if you have any further points to add please comment and contribute to the post below. [ 1,072 more word ]

Meeting the Passive house standard can be difficult but with nZEB being 'a step forward' in the evolution of Part L, we may be getting closer. Without the right client, design team and consultants on board getting a project certified for passive house might never be a possibility for you. However, with the new nZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards coming into effect, as soon as the end of 2018, through to 2020, and already being rolled out across Europe, I think that it is naive to think that meeting the passive house standard isn't the next peak to strive towards. Today I want to discuss one of my other passions outside of Passive House and that is Building Information Modelling (BIM). For almost all of my professional career thus far I have been utilizing Autodesk Revit as part of my day to day work in the office completing planning packages, tender packages and managing on site projects. However, now I hope to utilize it for passive house projects. [ 527 more words ]
