Great to see Glanmire Park progressing to public consultation 🌳

It is great to be part of this project, working with AECOM and Cork County Council providing arboricultural input.

Looking forward to seeing it all come together!

Ever wondered what the inside of a tree actually looks like? 🌳

This is the 3D model produced from our sonic tomography testing of this mature Copper Beech.

We tested the tree at two different heights, 60 cm and 80 cm above ground level, allowing us to build a better picture of what is happening internally.

But producing the images is only part of the process.

The next step is interpreting the results alongside what we observed during the tree assessment, before reaching our conclusions and making appropriate management recommendations.

We’ll share those conclusions in our next post.

But before we do… what do you see? 👀

What stands out to you or surprises you about the results?

I’d be really interested to hear your interpretation before we share ours.

Ever heard of a tree having like a CT scan? 🌳🩻

We’ve had quite a few questions about sonic tomography recently, particularly about what the test actually involves.

So, for anyone who hasn’t seen one carried out before, swipe through and we’ll take you through the process.

Sonic tomography allows us to investigate what is happening inside a tree when a visual assessment identifies something that needs a closer look.

And yes… the colourful tomography image everyone has been asking about is coming next 👀 stay tuned for next post with the results.

This mature Copper Beech needed further investigation before any management decisions could be made.

Using sonic tomography, we were able to build a picture of the tree’s internal condition without causing damage. Much like a CT scan in human medicine, it helps us gather the information needed to make informed, evidence-based decisions.

Every tree tells a story. Sometimes you just need to look beneath the surface. 🌳

Remember the tree from our previous post? This mature Copper Beech showed evidence of decay at the base in the initial tree assessment. Although the tree showed no signs of physiological decline or imminent failure, its prominence and location at the front of the property meant that further investigation was recommended before any management decisions were made.

That’s where sonic tomography comes in…

Not every tree assessment ends with a visual inspection.

Sometimes, further investigation is needed before any management recommendations can be made.

For this tree, we carried out sonic tomography to better understand its internal condition.

We’ll show you how it works tomorrow.

How do you assess whether a tree is safe?

It’s not just about looking at the tree.

This mature tree in a public park is a great example of where the VALID Tree Risk-Benefit approach can support the assessment process.

A good tree risk assessment considers much more than defects. We also look at questions such as:

• How often are people using the area?
• What would the consequences be if part of the tree failed?
• Are there practical ways to reduce risk while retaining the tree?

One of the things I enjoyed most about the VALID training is how it provides a clear, structured framework for making balanced decisions and explaining them in simple, easy to understand terms.

What would be the first thing you notice when looking at this tree?

Delighted to have completed the VALID Tree Risk-Benefit Validator course this week in Stockport, UK and to now be a registered VALID Tree Risk-Benefit Validator.

A big thank you to David .tree.risk for an excellent course. It was practical, engaging and full of useful discussions.

Looking forward to putting the VALID approach into practice on upcoming tree assessments.

How safe is a tree?

It’s a question we get asked regularly, but the answer is rarely straightforward.

When people see a large tree with dead branches or signs of decay, the first reaction is often that it should be removed. In reality, assessing tree risk is much more than spotting defects.

Good tree risk management is about understanding both the likelihood of failure and the consequences if that failure occurred. It is about making balanced, evidence based decisions that keep people safe while also recognising the many benefits trees provide.

This week Paul attended a specialist training to further develop his knowledge in tree risk assessment.

Continuous professional development is an important part of what we do at Holly Arboriculture, helping us provide the best advice to our clients.

Trees provide enormous environmental, social and economic value. Our role is to help retain them wherever it is safe and appropriate to do so.
