🍃The Role of Environmental Monitoring in Achieving Ireland's 2030 Climate Goals

While often criticised at home, Ireland's 2030 climate target is among the most ambitious in Europe, but these commitments will not be met by policy alone. They will be met, or missed, on the basis of measurable change in real projects, across real sectors, over the next four years. The role of environmental monitoring is to make that change visible – to quantify emissions, to verify abatement, to evidence compliance and to support the build-out of the infrastructure that decarbonisation requires...

🍃This week marks National Biodiversity Week 2026 and it is a good moment to talk about the quiet infrastructure behind nature protection: data

Waterways Ireland manages over 1,000 km of inland navigable waterways — the Barrow Navigation, Erne System, Grand Canal, Lower Bann, Royal Canal, Shannon Navigation, Shannon–Erne Waterway and Ulster Canal — and protects them as ecological corridors within its Heritage & Biodiversity Plan 2030.

🌊 These systems support coarse fisheries, reed and pondweed habitats, amphibians, damselflies, and the sedge warblers that breed along their margins.

NVM is proud to support Waterways Ireland's operational programmes by servicing inland water level monitoring stations and providing continuous oversight of the Netview platform, which publishes live water level data from stations across the network.

Reliable hydrometric data powers:

🔹Flow and lock management that sustains aquatic habitat

🔹Flood resilience for communities and infrastructure along the navigations

🔹The long-term evidence base for conservation, climate adaptation and Heritage & Biodiversity Plan delivery

Good environmental decisions start with good environmental data, let the NVM team support your next project

🌊 From the west coast to sites across the country, the NVM team have been out commissioning and installing monitoring equipment this week — including a new solar monitoring system in Galway and instrumentation work on projects further afield.

Different sites, same principle: reliable data from day one.

Whether it’s solar performance, vibration, settlement or groundwater, the instrumentation going in now is what underpins the decisions made across the lifetime of each project.

Coast to coast, the quieter layer of measurement is doing its work.

🚧 Among other jobs, the NVM team were on site this week supporting one of Ireland’s major road infrastructure programmes.

Our engineers were out commissioning monitoring instrumentation — the groundwork that keeps complex civil projects compliant and built on reliable data.

Behind every major construction programme is a less visible layer of measurement: vibration, settlement, groundwater and environmental conditions tracked from day one. Getting that layer right is what allows the visible work to proceed with confidence.

NEW Register for Small Wastewater Discharges: What S.I. 65/2026 Means in Practice

On 24 February 2026, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage signed European Union (Water Policy) (Small Wastewater Discharge Register) Regulations 2026 (S.I. No. 65/2026) into effect, which gives effect to Article 11(3)(g) of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and introduces a national register for a category of discharge that has, until now, sat outside both the Uisce Éireann discharge licensing regime and the section 4 authorisations carried over from the 1977 Act.

For local authorities, approved housing bodies, design teams and contractors working on residential delivery — and for the engineers advising them — the regulations close a regulatory gap that has been visible for some time. They also introduce a defined set of operating, sampling and ecological monitoring obligations that will need to be planned for at design stage, not retrofitted after handover...

🌍 Earth Day 2026

This year’s theme is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, and that speaks directly to the work our team does every day.

The NVM team was pleased to take part in this week’s IAH Conference Environmental Monitoring Workshop.

A strong focus throughout the session was on the practical application of hydrogeological methods and real-time monitoring technologies to support better decision-making on the ground.

Our own Bernard Burke contributed on surface water monitoring and flood alert systems, outlining how reliable, real-time data can support risk management, compliance, and more informed project delivery.

If you are progressing a project where surface water or flood risk is a consideration, the NVM team can support from early stage through to delivery.
