World Asthma Day 2026 is here.

The Global Initiative for Asthma has set this year's theme as "Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma – still an urgent need."

The numbers tell a sobering story: • 260+ million people live with asthma worldwide • 450,000+ deaths each year, most of them preventable • 96% of asthma deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Inhaled corticosteroids are essential. They treat the airway inflammation that drives asthma, prevent attacks, and save lives. But cost and availability still keep these medicines out of reach for too many people.

At Allergy Standards, we believe better asthma outcomes require both equitable access to medication and healthier indoor environments. Through the AAFA's asthma & allergy friendly Certification Program run with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), we test and certify products that reduce exposure to common indoor triggers including dust mite allergen, pet dander, mold, and VOCs.

Today, we join GINA and advocates around the world in calling for action. Everyone with asthma deserves the medication and the environments they need to thrive. Read our blog: https://www.allergystandards.com/news_events/world-asthma-day-2026-closing-the-global-gap-in-asthma-care/

Allergy Standards, in collaboration with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has certified Mohawk Flooring’s SmartStrand® carpet styles with Pur-Ease™ technology under the Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification Program.

This certification represents the first treated carpet to meet the requirements of the ASP:05-03 Textile Flooring Standard and its addendum, which establish a performance-based framework for evaluating products making defined allergen-related claims.

Testing under controlled laboratory conditions demonstrated that the product:
• Achieves measurable allergen reduction versus untreated carpet
• Maintains stable airborne allergen levels during use
• Meets defined indoor air quality criteria, including VOC emissions at 24 hours and 14 days

This work reflects a broader shift toward objective, performance-based assessment of emerging technologies in flooring and home environments.
As innovation continues, independent verification remains critical to ensuring that product claims are supported by robust, transparent methodologies.

Many congratulations to Mohawk Flooring and Mohawk Edge Partners !

Today is World Health Day, led by the World Health Organization (WHO) .

This year’s theme, “Together for health. Stand with science.”, is a reminder of the role science plays in improving health outcomes globally.

From medicines and vaccines to indoor environments, progress in public health is built on evidence, collaboration, and the application of science in real-world settings.

Our work is grounded in this approach. Through scientific testing, standards development, and certification, we focus on how everyday environments, particularly indoor air, can impact health.

The One Health concept also reflects this interconnected thinking. Human health does not exist in isolation, it is linked to the environments we live in.
Standing with science means continuing to translate evidence into practical solutions that support healthier lives.

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) released its 2026 Allergy Capitals report, providing important insights into the environmental factors influencing seasonal pollen allergies across the United States.

The report ranks the 100 most populated metropolitan areas based on pollen levels, over-the-counter allergy medication use, and the availability of allergy specialists.

This year’s findings highlight how changing environmental conditions, including warmer temperatures and extreme weather patterns, are influencing pollen seasons and allergy burden in many regions.

We are proud to work with AAFA through the Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification Program, scientifically evaluating household products against strict standards designed to help reduce exposure to allergens and asthma triggers in the home.

Congratulations to the AAFA team on the release of another valuable report.

We are very pleased to see three brands with Certified models recognised in the Scary Mommy 2026 Readers’ Choice Award – Best Air Purifier Brand nominations.

Congratulations to Rabbit Air Blueair and Alen on this well-deserved acknowledgement.

At Allergy Standards Ltd, our role is to apply rigorous, controlled laboratory testing to verify performance claims. Air cleaners that achieve the Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification must demonstrate:
✔️ Reduction of airborne allergen levels by at least 90% under defined chamber conditions
✔️ Capture of allergens within the filter, with ≥50% retained in the unit
✔️ Ozone emissions below 0.05 ppm

Recognition by consumers matters, particularly when it aligns with independently verified performance.

If you’re voting in this year’s awards, we encourage you to support brands that invest in science-based validation.

We are very pleased to announce the introduction of a new addendum to our ASP-05-03 Textile Flooring Standard.

This addendum establishes a structured, performance-based framework for evaluating emerging carpet technologies that make defined allergen-related claims.

As innovation in materials science continues to evolve, so too must certification standards. The new addendum provides a clear pathway for assessing measurable allergen-related performance endpoints under defined test conditions, while maintaining existing hygiene, microbiological, and indoor air quality requirements.

Importantly, this update does not represent a general recommendation of carpet for individuals with asthma or allergies. It applies only where specific, substantiated allergen-related claims are made and evaluated.

“Effective standards must evolve alongside science and innovation,” said Dr John McKeon, CEO of Allergy Standards Ltd. “This addendum reflects the reality that novel textiles, home furnishings and floor covering technologies are all being developed that warrant objective, performance-based assessment. Our role is to ensure that any environmental allergen-related claims are evaluated using robust methods that are meaningful to both the medical community and the built environment.”

Advances in materials, chemistry, and product design in flooring are paralleled with growing demands for transparency, credible health evidence, and trust. As a result, standards have become central to how innovation is validated and how confidence is built across the supply chain.

Ahead of The International Surface Event (tise) 2026, we’ve published a new article exploring how flooring standards have evolved in response to:
• new technologies
• changing consumer expectations
• closer alignment between medical science and the built environment

We see standards as drivers of progress that connect science, innovation, and real-world performance to help manufacturers and specifiers navigate an increasingly complex indoor environment landscape.

Market Week is about building product strategies that last beyond the season.

In bedding, one issue needs closer scrutiny: dust mite allergen exposure. Mattresses, pillows, and duvets are a primary source of year-round allergens, and consumers are increasingly asking how products are tested, what claims really mean, and whether they can trust what’s on the label.

We’ve just published a new article exploring:
• Why the bedroom is a high-risk zone for allergen exposure
• Why terms like “hypoallergenic” fall short
• What science-based certification actually verifies in bedding
• How certified products support differentiation, ESG goals, and buyer confidence

As expectations around health, transparency, and compliance continue to rise, verified performance matters more than ever.

We are delighted to announce an important update to our Air Cleaner Certification Standard (ASP:08)!

Allergy Standards Ltd has expanded the standard to include a new sub-category (ASP:08-09 ) designed specifically for compact portable air cleaners typically used in smaller spaces of up to 250 ft².

This addition reflects the growing demand for science-based validation of smaller air cleaning devices as more people work, study, and live in compact environments such as home offices, nurseries, and dorm rooms.

“With the growth of remote work and the increasing demand for personal air cleaning solutions, it’s essential that we provide clear, science-based guidance for smaller air cleaners,” said Dr John McKeon, CEO of Allergy Standards Ltd. “This expansion to include models designed for personal spaces reflects the evolving consumer need of a responsive and adaptive approach to air cleaning, ensuring manufacturers can demonstrate the true performance of compact devices while helping consumers identify products proven to reduce airborne allergens for specific use cases”
