SOCKETS OR SWITCH OUTLETS

We received a call of a client today who reported a burning smell, smoke and cracking noise coming from a shower switch in the hallway outside the bathroom.

When we arrived, we isolated and tested the switch. When we unscrewed the pullcord the rear of the pullcord was badly broken and exposed to the outdoor elements.

We replaced with a brand new shower switch.

This week we carried out a periodic inspection report on a property in South Dublin.

We found a number of sockets and switches with GREEN slime on them. The switches and outlets had green markings on them.

Green slime on wires is called cable greening. It happens when the copper wire reacts with chemicals in aging PVC insulation. This reaction creates a sticky corrosive goo. It shows the wire is breaking down.

This is a major fire hazard. 🔥🔥

It can also cause short circuits.The goo destroys wire connections. This leads to lost power or sparking. Cleaning it is only a short fix. It does not stop the wire from rotting.

You must hire a licensed professional to inspect the wiring. They will likely need to rewire the system.

You can find a local registered professional through ⁠Safe Electric Ireland.
