Hi folks, I've been getting a lot of callouts for wasps lately, an issuse I've no problem in dealing with. However, when I get to a lot of the wasp callouts I'm finding that it's actually honey bees that are the issue, with most calls being for a swarm that has landed on an alarm box,a tree in a garden or on a chimney stack. These swarms are literally just resting as they've been flying for a while, looking for a place to start a hive and will normally just fly off when they are rested. Most people don't know the difference between wasps and honey bees so I've attached a picture of both. Honey bees have different markings than wasps. They have dark yellow and black stripes and have a fuzzy type of upper body. Wasps have bright yellow and black stripes, with a v shaped kink in the yellow stripe. If you think that you have a wasp nest then please refer to the pictures below to help to determine the species. Honey bees are protected and will only be treated if they are a danger to public health and safety, otherwise I would recommend calling a registered bee keeper to remove the hive.
