Open wheelie bin lids are an ideal food source for rodents. To avoid attracting rodents put the rubbish in the bin NOT beside it or on top of lid. Always have your lids closed correctly. Put a weight on the lid to ensure it stays closed. Damaged bins should be repaired. Bag your waste before putting it in the bin and always wash your bin out after its emptied.

Wasps
We’ve been asked a lot lately about wasps in people’s homes and the best recommendations to get rid of them. Firstly, make sure that you are dealing with wasps and not bees as bees are protected.
Wasps are most active from May to November and can be very troublesome as they will find an access point into the fascia and will nest there or further into the roof voids. Unlike bees that just sting once, wasps will sting multiple times if they feel threatened. Therefore, keep your distance from their nest.
If the nest is located in a dark area such as the eaves or attic, do not shine a torch towards the nest as this will also upset them and they will head towards the light.
Full PPE must be worn along with a bee/wasp suit. Nests are destroyed using an insecticidal powder or dust. After a number of days the nest can be removed safely.

Think Wildlife
We at Comserv Pest Control Services align ourselves with the Dept of Agriculture and CRRU (Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use) promoting best practice and responsible rodent control, thereby protecting wildlife from rodenticide exposure. Rodenticides are vital to prevent disease in humans and animals, to protect property and equipment from damage and to ensure the highest possible standards of food hygiene.
But we are increasingly aware that those without the qualifications in rodenticides are using them and causing contamination of some of our most important wildlife species such as barn owls, kestrels and red kites.
Excessive use of rodenticides not only contaminates protected species it may also put children and domestic pets at risk.
Note: Take professional advice when issues occur with pests.

We always tell our customers that being proactive is far better than being reactive. During the good weather many leave their doors open and this becomes an easy access route for pests. The slightest opening, as little as 5mm, is enough for a mouse to enter.
And once they are in, take note, they will breed 5 to 10 times a year with a litter from 6 to 8. A young can start breeding at 30 days of age.
Remember: Pests need food, water and shelter. Remove these and you'll remove your problem.

Toys in your Garden
Rodents are unwelcome visitors to anyone's garden, especially on sunny days when we want to make the most of the good weather. With so much activity especially bringing the indoors outside its important to keep your garden tidy to minimize the risk of pest activity. If toys have been left out over the winter and grass has grown heavy around it it may become an area of shelter for unwanted visitors. Clean and disinfect toys and furniture before use and if possible store these items away in a shed when not in use.

Loose cables along the side of a house are ideal climbing frames for rodents. They will get onto a wall by your house or items leaning against the building and climb up the cables to gain access to your property through an opening as small as 6mm and into your attic. Once in they will start breeding.
Fix any loose cables to your wall to prevent rodents gaining access to your house.

How to keep your home pest proofed.
Did you know if a mouse can fit its head through a space the rest of its body can squeeze through?
Take a look around the outside of your home, garage etc and identify areas of possible access. Fill these gaps with cement and/or wire mesh. NEVER use expanding form or silicone as rodent have ever growing incisors which they need to keep filed down and will chew through them.
Remember: Pests need food, water and shelter. Remove these and you'll remove your problem

Bird Feeders
Bird feeders are a great asset to anyone's garden especially this time of year when the adult birds are feeding themselves and their chicks. Along with the feeders it is also important to leave out water for them.
But remember where there's food, water and shelter there will be pests. Keep the water for birds high enough to prevent rodents gaining access.
Ensure that you use a bird feeder that collects loose seeds under the feeder. Seeds left on the ground will attract rodents.
Remember: Pests need food, water and shelter. Remove these and you'll remove your problem
