What Are the Fire Alarm Regulations for My Business?

Any commercial building in Ireland must, by law, align with fire alarm regulations, so it is obviously important you know what these are. Failing to abide by these regulations could mean notable financial losses in the event of a fire, along with damage to physical assets and danger to other people.

In this blog post, we will walk through what the fire alarm regulations in Ireland actually are, so you can be sure your business is completely covered when it comes to fire safety.

By law, all businesses in Ireland must have a fire alarm system in place. As a business owner, you are obligated to follow the I.S. 3218 standards for fire alarm systems, which specifies requirements for how fire alarms must be designed, installed, and maintained. It covers both domestic and commercial properties and ensures that the apparatus you have in place meets a series of guidelines.

For every business, consideration needs to be made in regard to where fires are most likely to start, as this informs where smoke and heat detectors are placed throughout the building. The fire alarm system should be tested weekly and serviced every six months. If you own a building where people sleep – hotels, apartments, etc. – you are required to have a maintenance service every three months. All workers must also be able to hear the fire alarm from anywhere in the building, with call points made readily available at all exits.
