We've got a broody hen 🥰

I was warned that bantam hens get broody a lot and that made me want them even more 😉

She is on day 10 of sitting on her eggs. She has added a few more to it since then so come day 21, we could be in the labour ward for days 😅😆

We bring her food and water everyday and she is very chilled with us.

The rest of the flock join her in the nesting box at night and they all snuggle up keeping the eggs warm. So we're hopeful she'll hatch a successful batch 🐣

Follow along as things are going to get a whole lot cuter around here 💛

If they can’t see that they’re wrong, I suppose it’s up to me to work on how I see them 😂

A fox halved our flock in one foul swoop today

A horrendous sight for the kids to witness and absolute heartbreak for my lovely free ranging hens.

If there was ever a day to doubt myself, today is that day. The guilt is real. Putting the kids through that experience and heartache is a hard pill to swallow right now. The poor hens, the fear they must have felt running for their lives.

One of the hens was still alive when we found them and Matthew sat with her, rubbing her until she died, just so she would know she was loved. He was just incredible.

It's a sad day at Branching Out and maybe it's time to reassess.

Surviving ➡️ Thriving

I got 6 rescue hens from two months ago and it has been the most joyful and satisfying experience watching them transform into healthy, happy hens.

I won't lie, I was so naive to the conditions commercial hens are kept in and so clueless to the state that they would arrive in.

My heart broke when I saw them but I loved them from that second & I am fully aware to many that may seem daft!

They have become the friendliest, most curious hens and they are obsessed with human interaction. It's as if we are pure new to them, maybe they will get bored of us soon 😂 but I like to think I'm their "claw" (from Toy Story!.....anyone get me?!)

Our little brood keep lots of families in eggs, which in return means it keeps lots of hens out of appalling conditions. I am also lucky that I have the most amazing neighbours to help out when I'm away. We call them our community hens. Shouldn't every few every houses have a few hens 🥰

So for anyone thinking about rescuing or getting hens, I would highly recommend it.

I will make a more detailed reel on the transformation and introduction of all the rescues but for now enjoy Peggy's new look. So follow along for that.
