Gable ends have a weak point between the tiles & top of the roof.This is called the verge & was conventionally filled with mortar.These verges suffer from 2 main problems.Firstly as the mortar is porous and subject to expansion through freezing/thawing out,they crack and require regular maintenance.Secondly, as the timber that the tiles fix to have their ends located in this mortar they become damp, and rotten.
