Coming from a damp climate where the grass is always green, it's a shock to see just how dry land is without water.
The lush valleys here in northern Pakistan depend almost entirely on water from glaciers - and when that dries up, so does people's livelihood.
There's a stark contrast between the land that water feeds, and where it's absent.
In Ireland, the issues with water are very different: water infiltration into buildings, humidity at low-ish temperatures, mould growth, a damp climate that seems to predispose people to arthritis.

It's interesting to see how the different climates deal with water.

Look around you - what can often appear as repetitive elements (windows, doors etc.) are not so, on closer inspection. Makers have put their own stamp on what they create.
And maybe, without it being apparent, this is what gives a place character - we often don't register these differences, but if you think of a new housing estate, for instance, where each house is identical, we are aware of the 'lack of character'.
And I don't think character is created by changing the building rules dramatically, by making something different for the sake of it. What I like about this row of shops, their doors and windows, is that they are all within an ordinary, easily recognizable building pattern, yet each element is subtly different - Khan Sahib's doors are not the same as Malik Sahib's!

The Royal Stables in Doha, Qatar, is a state of the art complex where they breed Arabian horses, have international competitions, riding schools (with a separate one that's women only), and a veterinary hospital that not only looks after its own horses, but has patients flown in from around the world.
However, I was smitten by the old stables, no longer in use, but kept in remembrance of where it all started.

What is it about utilitarian buildings that do not have aesthetics first and foremost, but that hold such appeal?
I think of a kitchen showing wear and tear over time, but scrubbed clean. Or an old hospital in the care of nuns.

Do you feel this way, and if so, what example can you give of a space or building that is not built for its beauty, but shines nonetheless because of its function?

My beloved walnut tree, planted for the birth of my youngest daughter, needed pruning, and doing so made me think:
we resist downsizing our homes, because it can feel like loss. What if it allows for future growth, for energy to do other things? That's why I prefer 'RIGHTSIZING'.

A rightsized home. When you're thinking that your home is now too big for you, I prefer the idea of 'rightsizing' to 'downsizing', as the latter can sound negative.
And as I see it, your options
Renovate
Move
Build.
If your home is not the right size for you, I can help. Contact me at [email protected]

Even when a window doesn't look onto a view, allowing light from different orientations makes a space feel livelier. The evening, West light comes in very briefly before sunset through these windows, and it's worth the moments of gold, mellow light.

Window placement can often reduce storage. I like this solution with a monopitched roof that creates high level windows. However, I think it would be better visually with them on the back wall, under the window, only. I don't like when they return on the side walls, as the ceiling slopes down towards them.
Maybe that doesn't bother anyone else 😏.

I gave a talk yesterday at ICON plc, a company based in Limerick, entitled 'Would you like a home that quietly improves your life?'
I believe that health starts in the home, and the type of home we create has an impact on our health.
Do you think about the light in your home, the air quality, the materials that it's made of, the spaces for movement and for restoration? If this interests you, please keep following?

Funny how what speaks to us in or homes isv what we see around us in nature.

A 'similar' design can sometimes be 'spot off'. It's a question of proportion 😏
