Hello Folks,
As the introduction of water charges is fast approaching, Billing begins from next Wednesday, October 1st, we have been doing some checking on household usage.
Firstly reading your meter, Standard Irish Water meters have 5 digits in Black and 3 in Red. The Black digits are the ones used for billing; each unit represents one cubic meter of water usage which equates to 1000 liters.
Based on a family of 4, Two adults two children under 18 the allowance is 30,000 liters per household + 21,000 per child for the year which equals 72,000 liters per year or 197 liters per day.
The usage in our house was calculated on average to be 440 liters per day over the months of August and September. Our bills would work out at €220 per Year or €55 per quarter (billing period) obviously we will be making all efforts to reduce this :)
If you are connected to mains water and sewage you will be billed €4.88 per 1000L after your allowance,
If you have your own septic tank or waste water treatment, you will be billed €2.44 per 1000L after your allowance.
If you have a private well or on a group water scheme and have your own septic tank, you are not an Irish Water customer and will not be liable for billing.
There will be no standing charges or VAT on your water usage for the water meters.
There are many devices available on the market to reduce your water consumption, from a simple egg timer in the bathroom to reduce the amount of time spent in the shower to water restricting shower heads. Instant hot water kitchen taps and water displacement objects for your toilet cisterns. If you have any questions or need assistance with your household plumbing please call me on 086 824 1253.
