While at the moment temperatures might be back somewhat, it's easy to assume that water is less of a priority for livestock. However, providing cows with a constant supply of clean, fresh water remains one of the most important aspects of herd management all year round.

Water is the most essential nutrient in a cow's diet. Whether cows are milking, growing, or in calf, they rely on adequate water intake to maintain their health, digestion, and productivity. Even in cooler weather, cows can drink anywhere from 40 to over 100 litres of water per day, depending on their size, diet, and stage of production.

Clean water encourages cows to drink enough to support good feed intake. If troughs are dirty, contaminated with algae, or filled with stale water, cows may reduce their water consumption, which can quickly lead to lower milk yields, poorer growth rates, and reduced overall performance.
Regularly checking and cleaning water troughs also helps reduce the spread of bacteria and disease. Troughs should be free from mud, manure, and debris, with a reliable supply of fresh water available at all times. It's equally important to ensure that water flow rates are sufficient so cows never have to wait long for a drink.

As grazing conditions change after warm weather, farmers should continue to monitor water systems for leaks, blockages, or damage. A simple routine of inspecting troughs can make a significant difference to animal welfare and farm performance.

While at the moment the temperature isn't as intense , the need for clean, fresh water never disappears. Keeping water supplies clean and accessible is a straightforward management practice that supports healthier, more productive cows throughout the year.๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿšœ
