Race Night Services

Race Night Services Whelans’ Music Centre This business was founded by the late Jackie and Sadie Whelan in 1943, originally as a radio repair service.

With the advent of rural electrification in late 1940’s it expanded into an electrical installation service. This logically led to the start of a retail shop at 5 & 6 Summerhill, Nenagh. Initially dealing with small electrical appliances it later expanded by adding other departments dealing with musical instruments, public address systems, band equipment, white goods, fishing tackle and bicycles.

With the coming of television in the republic in 1961 a new division was added which expanded to a television rental provider covering most of North Tipperary. This division was sold on in 1980 to RTV rentals and the business was focussed on musical instruments, amplification, stereo systems and fishing tackle. The business expanded in 1969 with the construction of a additional new premises at 28 & 29 Summerhill. Following the death of the founder in 1981 the business continued under the management of his widow, Sadie and son Donal. The retail side of the business was closed in 2003 and the business now continues under the management of Donal Whelan, sound consultant. While public address systems ( indoor & outdoor) sales and rental continue, the main focus of the business is the provision of Race Night Services. This part of the business was started by Donal in 1990 and is widely known and utilised by many committees who readily recognise the fund-raising aspects of a well-run race night. The service has expanded over the years and now provides this facility to clubs, schools and individuals in counties Tipperary, Clare, Limerick, Galway and Offaly.

Umberto Eco, who owned 50,000 books, had this to say about home libraries:

"It is foolish to think that you have to read all the books you buy, as it is foolish to criticize those who buy more books than they will ever be able to read. It would be like saying that you should use all the cutlery or glasses or screwdrivers or drill bits you bought before buying new ones.

"There are things in life that we need to always have plenty of supplies, even if we will only use a small portion.

"If, for example, we consider books as medicine, we understand that it is good to have many at home rather than a few: when you want to feel better, then you go to the 'medicine closet' and choose a book. Not a random one, but the right book for that moment. That's why you should always have a nutrition choice!

"Those who buy only one book, read only that one and then get rid of it. They simply apply the consumer mentality to books, that is, they consider them a consumer product, a good. Those who love books know that a book is anything but a commodity."
