Book review: 'Nature's Acre' by Ciarán De Buitléar.

This charming, life affirming garden memoir charts the gentle revolution of an ordinary plot of land as it transforms into a productive wildlife sanctuary, inspiring friends, neighbours and the local community to join in and take action.

This is not an instructional book, instead, it reveals how pleasantly life can be altered when one individual chooses positive change.

Interested in healthy food, wildlife and building a sense of community? This easy read - also available as an audio book - shows how little wins at home can ultimately improve how a local authority manages weeds.

Nature’s Acre: “We began growing vegetables, but before long the project took on a life of its own. Volunteers joined us, local schoolchildren began visiting, and we started extending what we’d learned into other neglected spaces around the village."

Acknowledgement: The author, Ciaran De Buitlear, contacted me saying: “I recognised something familiar in the way you’ve made Bellis a living demonstration rather than simply telling people what they ought to do. That’s what we’ve been trying to do, on a different scale, and in a very different climate”.

I particularly loved the inclusion of the Old Country phraseology, it enriches the work's authenticity.

I’ve read quite a few posts lately from parents of autistic children who are worried, angry, exhausted and so fed up.

I am also receiving more messages through social media from parents and carers who sometimes just want a listening ear.

Everything seems so overwhelming .

They are tired and worried about their children. Some donot know where to turn next.

Sometimes they aren't asking me to fix anything, they just want someone to listen who understands what it feels like when everything seems to be a battle.

I am reading all their messages and it takes me back to all those years ago I was that mam fighting for my boys.

Fighting to get people to listen.
Fighting for assessments.
Fighting for education.
Fighting for support.

I remember sitting at my kitchen table surrounded by paperwork thinking, why does everything have to be such a battle?

That was more than 25 years ago , and here we are in 2026 and I’m reading messages from parents asking exactly the same questions.

That does really saddens me.

Parents are not asking for the earth. They are not lazy or entitled and not looking for something for nothing.

They are trying to get their child what they need.

Behind every report, every assessment, every EHCP, every transport appeal and every meeting is a child.
Behind that child is often a shatrered, tired parent or carer who has probably spent hours filling in those awful forms, making phone calls, sending emails, chasing people and lying awake at night worrying about what's next?

I know that feeling. I have not forgotten it.

Sometimes one battle finishes and another one starts.

To the parents and carers who message me, and to those who are right in the thick of it at the moment keep going x

Please don't try to go through everything alone.

Find local groups near you. Talk to other parents and carers who understand. Use them as a sounding board.

Sometimes just saying things out loud and having a good offload can help you realise you are not the only one going through this.

Take it one day at a time. Some days good, some days not so good.

P.S. And don't forget to Take 5. Even five minutes can sometimes help. đź’ś

And to the people making decisions about our children and adults:
Please do remember there are real families behind that paperwork.

Listen to them.
Don't judge them before you know their story.
We shouldn't still be having to say this after all these years.
While families are still having to fight to be heard, I will do my best to keep speaking up as and when I can đź’ś
