Sentimental journey home: Extending the family's original Kerry cottage has created a place big enough for all the family to gather and drop an emotional anchor at the homestead.

A first for DMA! 🤗

A house design set on the north-western coast of France, along an open but sheltered coastal landscape

We first worked with these clients all the way back in 2017 here in Co.Kerry, so when the opportunity came to work together on a project like this for a new stage of life we couldn’t say no… 🤗

Working alongside a local solicitor and engineer in France, we developed a home that carries the design approach we believe in into a very different setting — shaped by the coast, the climate, and the inside / outside lifestyle our clients are searching for… Our goal was for spaces to be open and to flow naturally, with constant connection back out to the landscape and the views beyond

At the same time, the house needed to respond to a new stage of life for our clients — a place to spend time with family, to come and go throughout the year, and to do so without unnecessary upkeep

Given the somewhat exposed coastal setting, the material palette was kept simple but robust

Raw finishes of Coreten steel and exposed concrete that will weather and ultimately settle into the rawness of the landscape over time

It’s been a really enjoyable process to bring a project like this to life in a new context 🥰

Never worked with an architect before?

You’re not alone — and if we’re being honest, building or renovating a home can feel… arduous.

There are a lot of moving parts.
Decisions that carry weight.
Budgets, planning, builders, unknowns.

That’s exactly why we’re here. 😄

At DMA Architects, we’ve guided over 300 homeowners through this process — turning uncertainty into clarity, and ideas into real, liveable homes. 🤩

We help you:
• Shape your ideas into a clear, buildable design
• Avoid costly mistakes before they happen
• Navigate planning with confidence
• Keep control of budget and scope
• Work alongside builders to bring it all together

Step by step, we take the pressure off — so you can actually enjoy the journey.

Because here’s the truth…

There’s a moment at the end of it all.
When you walk through the door, and everything just works.
The light, the space, the flow — it feels like yours.

That’s the payoff.

If you’ve been thinking about extending, renovating, or building new, but aren’t sure where to start…

Start with a conversation. 😊

DMA Architects are delighted to be taking part once again in this year’s Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) Simon Open Door initiative, offering consultations across Kerry, Cork and Limerick.

Registration is now open, and if you’re based in the region and thinking about renovating, extending, retrofitting or building a new home, this is an excellent opportunity to get clear, professional advice at an early stage.

For a donation of €125, you’ll receive a one-hour consultation with us, where we can talk through your ideas, assess the potential of your site or property, and help you understand the next steps — from design and planning through to costs and delivery.

Every cent raised going directly to the Simon Communities of Ireland, supporting people experiencing homelessness which is something very close to our hearts 🥰

Teach ar na Tonnta - House on the Waves

Perched on the enviable rock on the edge of Glengarriffs beautiful coast is our projecting pavilion home designed to sit quietly within its landscape

Large panes of glass frame and expose you to the bay and surrounding hills from the open plan living space letting light and the movement of the water shape your experience in the home

The interior is deliberately restrained, warm materials, clean lines allowing the view to carry the space.

Perimeter downlighting is embedded discretely in the ceiling, a drop down projector screen provides the entertainment and underfloor heating the comfort in what will complete a space that puts you in nature

Each element is designed to step back rather than stand out

We’re so extremely grateful to see our Barrow Harbour Extension Renovation featured as the feature project in the final 2025 issue of Plan Magazine.

This project was never about spectacle.
It was about continuity.

The original cottage has been in our clients’ family for generations. The brief wasn’t to replace it — it was to give it a new lease of life, while protecting the memories embedded in the walls.

At the rear of the site, a significant level change initially felt like a constraint. In the end, it became the anchor of the design.
Rather than fight it, we grounded the extension into it — allowing the change in height to subtly shape the internal experience.

What you see in the photos is not a dramatic gesture, but the quiet result of working with the land rather than against it.

A real labour of love for everyone involved.

There are often three key stages in the journey toward creating a grand design. It begins long before we are ever called in, and it’s often the most wonderful stage — when you sense there is something you want to capture, and when you realise that by committing to the project, things will never be quite the same again.

The next stage brings a mix of emotions: excitement at seeing what’s possible, ground being broken, structures beginning to take shape. It can also be arduous, with delays and difficult decisions along the way. But often, around the halfway point, a corner is turned — when windows begin to frame the views, and you’re reminded why you started in the first place.

The final stage is always the most rewarding. It’s real now, no longer just a dream, and it carries a deep sense of achievement — not because the journey is easy (it never is), but because seeing it through to the end is what makes it meaningful.

As we sign off for the year, we’re delighted to share one final piece of good news — the last grant of planning permission of 2025 🥳, for a new family home thoughtfully woven into an existing urban row of detached houses here in Tralee, designed in our own DMA style.

There’s something special about delivering news like this just before Christmas.

So from all of us at DMA — David, Angelo, Marie, James, Aleksey and Eadaoin — thank you to our clients, collaborators and supporters for another great year. We’re incredibly grateful.

We’ll see you in the new year so if you, or someone you know, is dreaming of that Grand Design in 2026 — make it a special.
