People visit cafe not just to have coffee, but to meet friends, to share stories and experiences, to share intellectual ideas and to have conversations. So, we started questioning about the atmosphere that we should offer for such meetings, especially for the younger generations. The conventional tables which are rectangular or circular are generally formal, and don’t support intimate sharing of ideas. So how to make a table which is compatible for personal, social, intimate and also distant conversations, sometimes within the same group of friends !
We studied how people position themselves while they take part in such gatherings. The space that was seen to be naturally left by the people during conversation is what we attempted to fill with a table. By doing so, the natural tendency of people to gather in this manner would not be hampered. This was meant to increase comfort during conversations. The table was designed in such a manner as to just have enough space to bear just a couple of coffee cups or small dishes. As a result, a free flowing form of the timber table top and the high density concrete support below was arrived by considering anthropometrics and tactile quality of the material.
