Ambara, a warm and welcoming home, in a 30 feet X 50 feet plot is like a puzzle with a 1000 pieces, slowly pieced together with the right hands, the spaces come alive. The colors are vivid, the design sparks uniqueness and an ingenious glass sky-light at forty odd feet steals the show. In the context of where the site itself is located, achieving an atmosphere of serene calm inside a home, that sits within the busy-bustling city of Bangalore seems almost pretentious and borderline fictitious, but to do so convincingly is no mean feat. The area of the site being compact with namely three abutting neighbouring plots, the main idea was to bring in light from the central sky-light. One can gaze into the sky from the oval, as it is fondly called, and watch the clouds slowly sail by while sitting in the comfort of their own home. Hence, there is no doubt as to why the home is named “Ambara”, sky in the local language of Kannada.

We are humbled to receive the "Well built Residential Award for Bengaluru Urban District 2020" from the Indian Concrete Institute - Ultra Tech Cement Limited, Bengaluru.
About the project - Residence for Shyamala and Jaysimha located in Bangalore. Nestled in a tranquil neighbourhood, the residence is born of a play of material, craft and technology. With its shorter edge facing the road along the North-East and encircled by plotted development along the others, the residence welcomes one with the warmth of the sun bouncing off its meandering brick walls. As if an earthen pot, brick walls are gracefully moulded along magnificent quarry-cut slabs of stone that define the entrance and the prayer-room.
Based on our principles as architects, the project entailed exploring passive solar architecture, harvesting rainwater, and efficient use of local material and artisanship. A strip of skylight illuminates the core along the east-west axis, and vertical fins placed along brick walls double-up as structural members and shading devices for windows. Filler slabs, use of brick and stone, and orientation of openings regulate indoor temperature such that one requires minimum mechanical cooling aids.

Ambara
-Pradyun.P.Rao

I was seeking to run away
From this chaotic planet,
And happened to slip into
A world with it’s own enchantment!

It had its own benevolent charisma,
The land down under although like Amoeba.
The shades of clay were rather pleasing,
My mind finally felt soothing.

The ascent was more beguiling
As instead straight, it was spiralling,
But the best part was glancing up,
Witnessing the clouds moving.

Just a peck away from the outside world
Yet at every step a new world unfurled
To bridge the gap between the tones of
ಜಲ, ನೆಲ ,ಪವನ ಮತ್ತು ಅಂಗಾರ,
And to charm you in its own aura,
ಬನ್ನಿ ನೋಡಿ, ನಮ್ಮ ಮನೆ , ಅಂಬರ.

The fluid shape and wooden deck-like treads of this staircase by us make it the "piece de resistance" of this Bangalore house, while the open risers give it a stepladder-like feel. Also note how the sturdy metal railing adds a subtle touch of industrial bling to this otherwise predominantly brown space.

Having travelled and stayed in various locations of contrast climates across India, Smt.Shyamala and Sri.Jaysimha a couple with two millennials approached us to build a home to settle down in Bangalore. Built on a 40x60 site, this residence at Vakil Gardens is an expression of their journey and adventures.
Inspired by the vernacular contemporary style, the home is deeply rooted in rustic and earthen elements. Sri. Jayasimha being a Civil Engineer and daughter Ritu pursuing Architecture was a great inspiration for us to make this home both an aesthetic and structural ensemble. With intent of keeping the home cool as an earthenware pot, the walls of the home are similarly profiled creating a unique space and sense of enclosure. Set with materials like natural stone, wooden parquet floorings, clay blocks reinforce the aesthetic quality and thermal comfort of the house. A play of nooks and corners, slits and openings ensures family interaction in the most playful manner. Craftsmanship in laying of bricks to make walls, in arranging the blocks to make filler slabs, beauty of quarry cut stones used as is adds an individualistic warmth to the home. Use of Indian Natural Stones in floorings adds to the comfort of the home. Our shared love for foliage and light expressed through ample skylights, green balconies took it from being a house to a home.

All material in nature, the mountains and the streams and the air and we, are made of Light which has been spent, and this crumpled mass called material casts a shadow, and the shadow belongs to Light.
