Every home should tell a story. This one tells a legacy.
Our client belongs to the Kumbara community, where pottery has been a way of life for generations. Rather than letting this heritage live only in memories, we wanted it to become part of the architecture itself.
Instead of a conventional RCC slab, we designed a filler slab using handcrafted clay pots embedded within the ceiling. More than a construction element, each pot celebrates the family’s roots and carries their craft into the next generation.
The exposed clay-pot ceiling transforms in the gym with a bold black finish, adding depth and a striking contemporary character. It then flows seamlessly into the relaxation spa, where traditional craftsmanship meets a calm, modern sensibility.
But this choice wasn’t just emotional—it was technically meaningful too.
Why a filler slab?
• The concrete in the slab’s tension zone contributes very little to structural strength, allowing it to be replaced with clay pots without compromising performance when properly engineered.
• Saves 20–30% concrete, reducing the structure’s dead load.
• Uses less cement, lowering embodied carbon.
• Improves thermal comfort through the insulating air trapped within the clay pots.
• Creates a beautiful, exposed ceiling while supporting local craftsmanship and eliminating the need for a false ceiling.
For us, architecture is at its best when it brings together culture, engineering, and sustainability. This ceiling doesn’t just support a roof—it carries a family’s legacy.
