In this concluding part of our Burul series, we look closely at the spaces that support the temple above. Beneath the main structure, the space created by raising the complex to meet the embankment level serves a dual purpose. It functions as a shaded community langar space for gatherings, while also housing a Meditation Hall designed intentionally devoid of sharp corners. The organic, curved walls allow light and air to flow without interruption.

At the south eastern corner of the site, we placed the guest house. Elevated with arched colonnades and private balconies, it anchors the site edge while offering dual vistas, looking out over both the temple precinct and the wide expanse of the Ganga. Standing on top of the shuttering a day before the pour to check the slab rebar, the monsoon breeze blowing across the river offered a great view of the Ganga.

From conceptual sketches and structural site visits to the finished spatial details, this project has been about building with respect for the river, the land, and the community.

“My journey to the site in Burul is as much part of the architecture as the drawings themselves. I navigate through the Budge BudgeTrunk Road, leaving behind the chaos of Kolkata, before the landscape opens up to rural bengal. The transition is bliss: A narrow winding road along the banks, passing old brick kilns & factories among other colonial era structures. Makes me stop now and then to take a picture, up until i reach the site.” -
As the sketch here depicts, the design follows this natural topography. Lifting the temple to the same height as the embankment also gave it a clear view of the water. This extra height means the tallest dome is the first to catch the morning sun and the last to hold the glow of the sunset, making the building a constant landmark, on either side of the river. The central Shikhara marks the garbagriha, while the surrounding domes surround it like a mountain range. this hierarchy would lead eye, even from across the hooghly. We proposed deep arches and overhangs, that keep the walls from soaking up the afternoon sun, the jaalis allow the river breeze to flow through the building rather than just hitting a flat wall. As the day winds down, the river bank comes alive with people, gathering for an evening “Adda”, against the changing sky. We are excited to see how this project grows to eventually weave itself into the life of the neighbourhood.

In Burul, South 24 Parganas, the site sits adjacent to the ferry ghat, within a landscape of swaying coconut trees, chirping birds, light breeze blowing across from the river and the steady rhythm of fishermen boats disappearing into the horizon.
One of the biggest challenges at the site was the 3-meter level drop from the river embankment. While land-filling is the standard response, it often leads to long-term settlement issues and disrupted drainage.

We raised the complex on stilts to match the embankment level, creating in process a negetive space beneath the Garbha Griha. The space which would have been filled by earth now served as a shaded, serene Meditation Hall/Langar space. This Ensured natural uninterrupted drainage during heavy monsoons & allowed the structure to breathe with the land.

A reminder that as architects, our endeavor should always be to build in harmony with the existing landscape.

In one of South Kolkata’s most congested neighbourhoods, we designed a home that feels surreal to exist there.

No open plots. No wide roads. Just a narrow site surrounded by density, noise, and compromise.

We didn’t resist the constraint — we built through it.

▪ Vertical planning
▪ Exposed brick and white stucco
▪ Green balconies as soft screens
▪ A full terrace garden
▪ Interiors that flow, breathe, and hold quiet

This isn’t luxury that ignores context.
It’s luxury that grows because of it.
