What happens when Kerala tradition meets modern minimalism?

Warm wood, clean lines, and quiet details come together without one overpowering the other. Tradition is not treated as decoration. It becomes the quiet backbone of a calm, livable space.

This is design that respects where it comes from while staying light, functional, and ready for everyday life. Not loud. Not temporary. Just honest and lasting.

House of Aging Stones, a Kerala home built to weather rather than resist, now featured in Rethinking The Future, RTF.

A half built house we chose not to erase. We opened it back to the land it stood on, let natural stone weather instead of resist, and let five bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen thread into one open, shared plan.

Design in 2020. Interrupted by the pandemic. Completed in stages by 2025.

Full story on RTF, link in bio.

Our kind of office culture.

The same studio where we debate massing studies and floor plans became a dining hall for sadhya, then a playground for games nobody wanted to lose. A pookalam took shape on the floor where drawings usually get pinned up.

A quiet reminder of what actually holds a team together. Not desks or deadlines, but these pauses. Eating together, playing together, remembering why the work matters.

Team bonding rarely needs a planned offsite. It lives in the everyday space a team already shares.

Grateful for a team that shows up fully for both the work and the celebration.

Happy Onam.

Interior design should never be done just for the sake of doing it.

It should feel durable, livable, lasting, and able to evolve with the people living in it.

The House of Aging Stones shows this so clearly. Natural stone and teak are left to age with grace. They gain character over time instead of looking dated. The spaces prioritise honesty, everyday comfort, and quiet connection rather than trends that fade.
A home that grows more meaningful with the years is worth far more than one that only looks finished on day one.

A Kerala house has always carried at least three things at once, shelter, social hierarchy, and a quiet, ongoing argument with whoever once looked down on the people building it.

What has actually changed across generations is not that we stopped building for status. It is that we now have enough technical and material knowledge to signal status without giving up climate responsive comfort, or at least the freedom to choose that if we want it.

I explored this layered history for the August issue of Vanitha Veedu, why these houses feel the way they do, and why the story has never been as innocent as nostalgia makes it sound.

When your family built or renovated a house, what do you think it was actually arguing for, comfort, status, or something owed to history. Let us discuss in the comments.

A tree we chose not to remove shaped the entire house.

The jackfruit tree was already there, older than any drawing. We built around it, so the plan followed the tree. That one call set where the light enters, where the rooms turn, why the walls stay raw and the palette quiet. The architecture answered the site instead of arguing with it.

The Hindu PropertyPlus featured the project this month, the House Beneath a Jackfruit Tree, a home in Malappuram, Kerala.

Most sites arrive with something worth keeping. The real work in the built environment is noticing it before the bulldozer does.

What would you have built around, and what would you have cleared?

Architect first? Engineer first? Interior designer? Contractor? PMC?

Every reel seems to have a different answer, usually the one that suits whoever is talking.

But a building does not come in separate boxes. Structure affects planning. Services affect interiors. Cost touches everything. In the end, someone has to hold the whole thing together, and that is not really a question of title.

So maybe the first question is not who to hire. It is who can see the whole project, bring the right specialists in at the right time, and stay responsible when the decisions collide.

Sometimes that is an architect. Sometimes an engineer. Sometimes a PMC, or design-build. The model changes. The need for someone to hold it together does not.

Swipe through. Save this for the day you start planning to build.

1. End single point failure testing. Multi session, computer adaptive exams. ( IIT JEE)

2. Disconnect exams from the coaching monopoly. Composite evaluation, not one test.

3. Eliminate paper logistics risk. Encrypted, time locked digital delivery.

4. Separate the examiner from the auditor. An independent national assessment board.

5. Decentralize entrance examinations. Empower states to conduct their own standardized entrance exams aligned with national quality benchmarks, reducing dependence on a single nationwide test while respecting regional priorities.

Trust is the final qualification. An exam should reward effort and ability, not just who can afford to navigate the system.

Save this if you know a student, a parent, or a teacher who needs to see it.

Rich Dad Poor Dad says your house is a liability. Six angles it never counted say otherwise.

Poor dad: a real schoolteacher. Rich dad: a man nobody has ever verified existed. The book asks you to despise one and admire a ghost.

Underneath the sums: a house works twice. It gives your mind a floor to stand on, and its equity can still fund a business, a degree, an emergency, without you ever selling it.

Housing isn't the reward for financial discipline. Article 25 of the Universal Declaration lists it next to food and medical care. A baseline, not a luxury.
