വൈദ്യുത ഉപകരണങ്ങളുടെ ലോഹഭാഗങ്ങളില്‍ ഇൻസുലേഷൻ തകരാറുകൊണ്ടോ മറ്റോ അവിചാരിതമായി വൈദ്യുതപ്രവാഹമുണ്ടായാല്‍ (Earth Leakage), ആ ഉപകരണം പ്രവർത്തിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വ്യക്തിക്ക് വൈദ്യുതാഘാതമേല്ക്കാൻ (Electric Shock) വലിയ സാദ്ധ്യതയുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരം സന്ദർഭങ്ങളിൽ പ്രസ്തുത ഉപകരണത്തിലേക്കും സർക്യൂട്ടിലേക്കുമുള്ള വൈദ്യുതി പ്രവാഹം ഉടനടി നിർത്തി വൈദ്യുതാഘാതം ഒഴിവാക്കുന്നതിനുള്ള സംരക്ഷണോപാധിയാണ് RCCB അഥവാ Residual Current Circuit Breaker. നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിൽ പൊതുവെ ELCB (Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്നത് യഥാർഥത്തിൽ RCCB എന്ന ഉപകരണമാണ്. ELCB എന്ന വോൾട്ടേജ് ഓപ്പറേറ്റഡ് ഉപകരണം ഇപ്പോൾ പ്രചാരത്തിലില്ല.

ഒരു വൈദ്യുത സർക്യൂട്ടിൽ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന RCCB ഫെയ്സിലൂടെയും, ന്യൂട്രലിലൂടെയും വരുന്നതും പോകുന്നതുമായ വൈദ്യുത പ്രവാഹം ഒരുപോലെയാണോ എന്ന് സദാ സമയവും നിരീക്ഷിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇതിൽ റിംഗ് രൂപത്തിലുള്ള കോറിലായി മൂന്ന് കോയിലുകൾ ചുറ്റിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഒരു കോയിൽ ഫേസ് ലൈനിന് ശ്രേണിയായും (Series Connection) അടുത്തത് ന്യൂട്രൽ ലൈനിന് ശ്രേണിയായും, മൂന്നാമത്തെ കോയിൽ (Tripping coil) ട്രിപ്പിംഗ് മെക്കാനിസവുമായും ബന്ധിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. ഫേസ് കോയിലും ന്യൂട്രൽ കോയിലും വിപരീതദിശകളിൽ ചുറ്റിയതിനാൽ‍, സാധാരണഗതിയിൽ‍ (ലീക്കേജില്ലെങ്കിൽ ഫേസ് കറണ്ടും ന്യൂട്രൽ കറണ്ടും തുല്ല്യമായിരിക്കും) ഇരുകോയിലുകളും സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന കാന്തികമണ്ഡലങ്ങൾ പരസ്പരം നിർവീര്യമാക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. പരിണിത കാന്തികമണ്ഡലം (Resultant magnetic feild) പൂജ്യമായതിനാൽ റിലേ പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നില്ല.
സർക്കീട്ടിൽ എവിടെയെങ്കിലും കറണ്ട് ലീക്കേജ് ഉണ്ടായാൽ, ന്യൂട്രൽ കറണ്ടിൽ‍ വ്യത്യാസം ഉണ്ടാവുകയും പരിണിത കാന്തികമണ്ഡലം (Resultant magnetic feild) വർദ്ധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. തല്ഫലമായി റിലേ കോയിലിൽ ഒരു പൊട്ടൻഷ്യൽ വ്യതിയാനം അനുഭവപ്പെടുകയും കോയിൽ‍ ഉത്തേജിപ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ട് ട്രിപ്പിംഗ് മെക്കാനിസം പ്രവർത്തിച്ച് വൈദ്യുതബന്ധം വിച്ഛേദിക്കപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. Residual Magnetic Flux-നാല്‍ ട്രിപ്പിംഗ് മെക്കാനിസം പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഇതിനെ Residual Current Device എന്ന് വിളിക്കുന്നത്.

വൈദ്യുതി അപകടങ്ങള്‍ നാള്‍ക്കുനാള്‍ വര്‍ദ്ധിച്ചു വരുന്ന സാഹചര്യത്തില്‍ RCCB വയറിംഗിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തിൽ തന്നെ‍ സ്ഥാപിക്കേണ്ടത് അനിവാര്യമാണ്. മികച്ച സുരക്ഷിതത്വത്തിനായി എനർജി മീറ്റർ - കട്ടൗട്ട് ഫ്യൂസ് - RCCB വഴി മെയിൻ സ്വിച്ചിലൂടെ DBയിലേക്ക് പ്രധാന വയർ പോകുന്ന തരത്തിൽ വേണം വയറിംഗ് ചെയ്യാൻ.
